Swing and Miss With Buehler and Webb

On the one hand, it’s been the weakest year in terms of strikeouts in Walker Buehler’s MLB pitching career.

While making an NL-leading 33 starts, the Dodgers right-hander is averaging a career-low 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

That being said, almost every time the 2021 NL All-Star toes the rubber, he’s going over the strikeout total demanded of him in the prop for this game. That bar is set at 4.5 strikeouts.

Buehler has exceeded that total in 19 of his last 21 starts. He’s also gone over 4.5 strikeouts in 26 of his last 30 trips to the mound.

Likewise, Giants right-hander Logan Webb is well-versed in fanning opposition batters. He set career highs in virtually every category this season. That included total strikeouts (158) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.6).

Webb’s strikeout total for this game is established at 5.5. He’s gone over that number in each of his last two starts and 10 of his past 12 times on the hill.

However, he’s managed to hit the over on that count just once in three starts this season against the Dodgers. He fanned seven LA batters in five innings and got the win in an 11-6 Giants verdict on May 27. In back-to-back appearances against the Dodgers on July 21 (five innings ) and July 27 (six innings), Webb struck out five hitters on each occasion.

Picks: Walker Buehler over 4.5 strikeouts (-133); Logan Webb under 5.5 strikeouts (-154)

Like Grandfather, Like Grandson?

Carl Yastrzemski was an outstanding playoff performer. In 17 career MLB postseason games with the Boston Red Sox, Yaz batted .369 with four home runs and 11 RBI.

Grandson Mike Yastrzemski gets his first crack at postseason play and the Giants’ right fielder is beginning with good odds to get off to a promising start. Yastrzemski is a career .300 hitter (6-for-20) when facing Buehler. His numbers include a double, a triple, three RBI and an OPS of .798.

Giants’ third baseman Evan Longoria is hitting .357 (5-for-14) against Buehler.

Dodgers’ third baseman Justin Turner is also known for his postseason prowess at the plate. Turner is a career .294 hitter with 13 homers and 49 RBI in 73 playoff games. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in homers, hits (80), RBI (42), doubles (19) and runs (41).

Against Webb, Turner is batting .429 (3-for-7). All three of his hits off of Webb are doubles. Turner has driven in two runs. He shows an .857 slugging percentage and 1.413 OPS.

Picks: Mike Yastrzemski over 0.5 hits (-128); Evan Longoria over 0.5 hits (-143); Justin Turner over 0.5 hits (-238)
