The San Francisco Giants (60-35, 30-22 away) and Los Angeles Dodgers (59-38, 31-16 home) continue to battle it out for first place in the ultra-competitive National League West. They will meet once again on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, with first pitch scheduled for 10:10 PM EST. On the mound, we’ll have two of the NL’s best arms going head to head in Anthony DeSclafani and Walker Buehler.
Wednesday’s game saw the Giants scoring three unanswered runs in the top of the ninth off Kenley Jansen to secure a 4-2 comeback win thanks to a two-run blast from Wilmer Flores. Julio Urias threw seven innings of one-run baseball for LA while giving up just three hits. Logan Webb was also solid for the Giants, surrendering two earned runs in five innings of work.

Probable Pitchers
DeSclafani has been one of the many bright spots on this Giants pitching staff this season. As a team, they currently boast a 3.27 ERA, which is second in the big leagues behind only the Dodgers.
DeSclafani is enjoying a very impressive campaign, going 10-4 with a 2.78 ERA in 19 starts. The right-hander has tossed at least six innings in his last three appearances, but he did take the loss against the Cardinals last time out.

LA as a lineup only has 16 at-bats off DeSclafani, but they have clubbed five homers off him. He’s also compiled a career 6.32 ERA and 1-7 record in nine starts against the defending champions. Needless to say, the Dodgers haven’t been DeSclafani’s favorite opponent.
DeSclafani vs Buehler
10-4 | Record | 10-1 |
2.78 | ERA | 2.37 |
113.1 | Innings Pitched | 121.1 |
103 | K’s | 122 |
28 | BB | 27 |
Buehler has been a stud for Los Angeles in 2021, basically emerging as the ace, especially after Trevor Bauer was put on administrative leave. The former Vanderbilt standout has a 2.37 ERA and has been dominating with his mid to high 90’s heater and knee-buckling breaking ball.
Buehler got another win on Saturday to take his record to 10-1 after going seven innings against the Rockies while allowing just two earned runs.
Walker Buehler is 32–9 (.780) with a 2.78 ERA in 79 career starts. Only three pitchers won three-quarters of their decisions in their first 80 starts w/ a sub-3.00 era:
Sal Maglie (51–14, .785, 2.84)
Whitey Ford (48–13, .787, 2.69)
Doc Gooden (49–16, .754, 2.10)#Dodgers #MLB pic.twitter.com/JqJiRqwWCC— Elias Sports Bureau (@EliasSports) July 17, 2021
The Giants have already seen the 26-year-old twice this season back in May, with Buehler walking away with no-decisions in both starts. In fact, he has been terrific against San Francisco in his young career, compiling a 6-0 record and 2.17 ERA. The Giants will certainly have their work cut out for them on Thursday.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Giants Batters | Batting Average vs Buehler | Dodgers Batters | Batting Average vs DeSclafani |
---|---|---|---|
Curt Casali | .000 | Austin Barnes | .500 |
Alex Dickerson | .143 | Matt Barnes | .1000 |
Steven Duggar | .300 | Cody Bellinger | .200 |
Wilmer Flores | .000 | Mookie Betts | .400 |
Buster Posey | .273 | Max Muncy | .273 |
Austin Slater | .500 | AJ Pollock | .125 |
Donovan Solano | .000 | Albert Pujols | .300 |
Mike Tauchman | .500 | Will Smith | .600 |
LaMonte Wade Jr | .000 | Chris Taylor | .333 |
Mike Yastrzemski | .231 | Justin Turner | .188 |
The Giants have had absolutely no problem getting it done at the plate this year. They score 4.6 runs per game, which is sixth in the majors. In fact, San Francisco is in the top-10 in every notable offensive category. Veteran Buster Posey has been absolutely raking, leading the team with a .330 average while clubbing 13 home runs.

Thursday will arguably be their most difficult task in the series yet though. Buehler is a bonafide superstar and can absolutely deal against any team in the big leagues. The best bet will be to rattle him early and get to the Dodgers pen, where the Giants could potentially do some damage again.
If you thought San Francisco could really swing it, LA has been even better. They hit for power, average, and get on base at an extremely high rate. Justin Turner is leading the way for Dave Roberts’ squad, batting .302 with 17 bombs. However, he has struggled immensely against DeSclafani.

Chris Taylor has been red-hot in the series, going 5 for 12 with three homers and a double. Coincidentally enough, he also has a .333 average versus DeSclafani. Batting leadoff, it will be important for him to set the tone early.
Giants vs Dodgers Pick
This four-game series is obviously huge as both clubs fight in the NL West, but I don’t see the Giants coming out on top again. DeSclafani’s track record against the Dodgers is very poor, while Buehler has absolutely carved San Francisco in his career.
I expect LA to cover the run line here.
Pick: LA Dodgers -1.5 (+125)
