Montgomery is Mr. No-Decision

Montgomery has not factored in the decision in 10 of his 14 starts this season. However, the Yankees are 11-3 when he takes the mound.

In his previous start Sunday against the Oakland Athletics at Yankee Stadium, Montgomery had a no-decision. He gave up one run and three hits in 5.1 innings, with six strikeouts and two walks.

Montgomery has not had a decision in his last three starts and has gone 11 outings since his lone loss of the season April 17 against the Tampa Bay Rays. The lefty is 2-0 with a 3.97 ERA during that stretch.

He has has struggled on the road in 2021, going 1-0 with a 5.71 ERA in seven starts. He is 3-0 with a 3.14 ERA in nine night games.

Against the Red Sox, Montgomery is 1-0 with a 4.13 ERA in six career starts, including 0-0 with a 6.59 ERA in three games at Fenway Park.

Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez has given Montgomery trouble, going 5-for-10 with a home run.

Montgomery has posted five quality starts this season.

Eovaldi Looks to Get on Track

Eovaldi is 0-2 with a 4.41 ERA in his last three starts since winning three consecutive outings.

He took the loss last Sunday against the Royals in Kansas City. Eovaldi allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in four innings with four strikeouts and one walk.

However, this is what Eovaldi looked like when he started the season with a 7-2 record.

In 10 home starts this season, Eovaldi has a 3-3 record and 4.29 ERA. He is 3-1 with a 2.52 ERA in six games at night. He has recorded five quality starts in 15 games and pitched at least five innings 13 times.

Eovaldi won his lone start against the Yankees this season, beating them June 4 at New York when he yielded two runs (one earned) in six innings. Lifetime against the Yankees, he is 2-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 10 games, including seven starts.

Yankees third baseman Gio Urshela returned to the lineup Friday night after missing two games with a sore right shin. He is 4-for-10 against Eovaldi with one double and one home run. In his last six games, Urshela is hitting .417 (10-for-24) with five runs, two doubles, two homers, four RBIs and a hit by pitch.

In four games since returning from the injured list, first baseman Luke Voit is 6-for-17 (.353) with one double, one triple, two home runs and three RBIs.

Left fielder Clint Frazier is 4-for-7 with two doubles and one homer off Eovaldi while catcher Gary Sanchez is 1-for-13 with one homer and six RBIs.

Red Sox Owning Yankees

The Red Sox’ perfect record against the Yankees this season is a reversal of recent form. New York was 23-6 against Boston during the 2019 and 2020 seasons.

On Friday night, Hunter Renfroe had two RBIs for the Red Sox, including the go-ahead sacrifice fly in the third inning, and Boston’s pitchers held the Yankees scoreless over the final seven innings.

Garrett Whitlock got the win after allowing no runs and one hit over two innings. Matt Barnes picked up his 16th save.

The law of averages say the Yankees are due for a win and Montgomery has delivered for them often in 2021 – even if he does not have the individual wins to show for it.

The Pick: Yankees (+102)
