Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic begin their World Baseball Classic title pursuit Friday evening, with Nicaragua’s starting pitcher Ronald Medrano up against Philadelphia Phillies ace Christopher Sanchez, who takes the bump for the DR. Online sportsbooks are heavily favoring Dominican Republic -1200 on the moneyline, tabbing them the favorite to win Group D, while Nicaragua is a massive +5000 longshot.
The Dominican squad is star studded, led by starting pitcher Sanchez, who finished second in N.L. Cy Young voting last year. They have thunderous bats, headlined by the likes of Juan Soto, Vladimir Guerrero Jr, Manny Machado, Julio Rodriguez, Fernando Tatis Jr. and plenty more star power.

Wagering on the favorites at -1200 provides absolutely no value whatsoever. I definitely am far more bullish on expecting the Dominican Republic to mash their way to a victory by five or more runs.
The only player on Nicaragua that saw extensive time in Major League Baseball last season was Mark Vientos. The Mets third baseman hit .233 with 17 HR and 61 RBI, so manager Dusty Baker will have his work cut out for him.
Nicaragua’s starting pitcher is Ronald Medrano, who’s never tossed in the majors. He’s up against a fierce batting order that will come at him in waves. Nicaragua is competing in their second ever WBC, with their inaugural outing in 2023, where they lost all four contests by a combined scored of 22-4. They’re the 16th ranked nation in the world, which interestingly isn’t that far behind the Dominican Republic (12).
Christopher Sanchez takes the hill for the DR, and the lefty will surely have Nicaragua’s hands full. He posted phenomenal numbers for the Phillies last year, going 13-5 with a 2.50 ERA and 212 strikeouts en route to second place in the NL Cy Young voting (Paul Skenes).
If pitching wasn’t enough to flummox the underdogs, the bats for the Dominican are just as lethal. It’s a star studded group of hitters like Soto, Guerrero Jr, Tatis Jr. and plenty others, and runs should come in bunches. One player noticeably absent is Jose Ramirez of the Cleveland Guardians. He finished third in American League MVP voting, but has decided not to compete due to personal reasons.
The World Baseball Classic odds to win it all have the DR as either the second or third choice at +330, with Nicaragua a gargantaun +30000 underdog, which is the second longest odds, ahead of only Brazil.
