  • Baltimore (22-56) sits dead last in the MLB
  • The Orioles lost the fourth most games in a single season in 2018
  • The New York Mets own the MLB record for most losses in one season with 120

Could the Baltimore Orioles really be the worst baseball team ever? They took a run at the title last year and are well on their way to entering the race again this season.

Baltimore Orioles 2019 Loss Total Odds

How Many Games Will the Orioles Lose in 2019? Odds
Over 109.5 -115
Under 109.5 -115

*Odds taken 06/24/19

The Orioles are currently 22-56 which for those not the quickest at math is a tidy .282 winning percentage. Less than half the season is complete and if you double Baltimore’s losses you’d win this bet comfortably. There are several factors working against them which make the over a strong value play here.

Baltimore doesn’t have a strong prospect pool, so it’s not like there’s a group of September callups about to turn the tide. Their losing ways are likely to continue until they’ve played all 162 games.

The competitiveness of the American League East is also working against them. The New York Yankees look like they may never lose again and Tampa Bay and Boston are also both playoff-caliber teams. A weak roster combined with a tough schedule equals a pile of losses coming for the lowly Orioles.

Pick: Over 109.5

Will the Orioles Break the Mets 120 Loss Record?

Orioles To Break All-time MLB Single Season Loss Record? Odds
Yes +700
No -1500

If you don’t think the Orioles can break the New York Mets’ single season loss record of 120 in one season I’d suggest you stay away from this bet, the value just isn’t there. If, on the other hand, you think this incarnation of the Orioles isn’t only worse than last year’s abysmal team that lost 115 games but worse than every team ever, there’s value in betting it at +700.

Most Regular Season Losses in MLB History

Team Year Record
New York Mets 1962 40-120
Detroit Tigers 2003 43-119
Philadelphia Athletics 1916 36-117
Boston Braves 1935 38-115
Baltimore Orioles 2018 47-115

For my money, I think they have a real shot.  I mentioned the tough division earlier and when you look at their stats it gets real ugly. The Orioles rank 27th in runs scored and that’s actually their best stat, believe it or not. They rank 29th in fielding and dead last in ERA.

This team does absolutely nothing well and is primed to play a schedule full of teams battling for playoff position. Losing 121 games will be tough, but it’s certainly within reach.

Pick: Yes (+700)
