The San Diego Padres (69-61, 28-32 away) and Los Angeles Angels (63-67, 33-31 home) conclude a two-game series on Saturday night at Angel Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 9:07 PM EST. San Diego ended a four-game losing streak on Friday night with a 5-0 win behind a fantastic outing from Joe Musgrove, who threw a complete game. However, the Angels have won three of the last four meetings between these two teams.
The Padres send southpaw Ryan Weathers to the mound, while LA counters with lefty Jose Suarez.

Probable Pitchers
Weathers has been struggling this season for San Diego, posting a 4-6 record and 5.27 ERA in 23 appearances. 16 of them have been starts, with his last outing on Sunday, taking the loss against the Phillies after tossing just two innings while allowing three earned runs. In fact, across Weathers’ previous five games, he’s surrendered a combined 28 runs. Needless to say, the lefty has been getting absolutely lit up. Opposing teams are also hitting .331 off his four-seamer in 2021 and 11 of the homers he’s given up have been via the fastball.
Ryan Weathers
First 11 outings (six starts): 1.31 ERA, .168 opp AVG.
Last 11 outings (10 starts): 7.98 ERA, .343 opp AVG.He's given up five hits and three runs in two more innings today.

However, the 21-year-old has never faced the Angels in his short big-league career. Jack Mayfield, who used to play for the Astros and Mariners, has two at-bats against Weathers, but that’s the only exception in LA’s lineup. This could be a good thing for him as he looks to put together a solid start for a Padres team that desperately needs to start winning more ball games.
Weathers vs Suarez
4-6 | Record | 5-7 |
5.27 | ERA | 4.06 |
80.1 | Innings Pitched | 64.1 |
61 | SO | 59 |
25 | BB | 24 |
Suarez has lost three straight starts, but he hasn’t been necessarily awful. In his last appearance, the left-hander was chased after four innings by the Indians after giving up three earned runs, but the Angels didn’t exactly help his case as they failed to score a single run. Before that, it was a similar situation. Suarez held a potent Yankees offense to two earned, but LA’s offense was ice cold once again. In fact, during that span of three outings, the Angels have given the Venezuelan one run of support.
José Suarez went four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. He struck out four. Two runs came on a two-run homer from Rosario that just cleared the shortened fence in left field.

Only four hitters on the Padres have actually faced Suarez and although it’s a small sample size, they’ve raked off him. He also has an ERA over 10 against NL opponents and has been extremely disappointing since the All-Star break.

The Padres’ postseason hopes are slowly fading away, but Friday’s victory was a step in the right direction. After getting swept by their NL West rivals, the LA Dodgers, San Diego needed to bounce back. Musgrove was dealing, allowing just three hits in the shutout. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado led the charge offensively, both going 2 for 5.

As of right now, the Padres trail the Cincinnati Reds by two games for the final Wild Card spot. Another victory on Saturday will be crucial for Jayce Tingler’s squad before heading out to Arizona for a three-game set with the Diamondbacks, who they just took two out of three from in early August.
The Angels have now lost three straight games after dropping two in a row to the Baltimore Orioles before Friday night. Their bats have actually been one of their strengths this season, but that simply hasn’t been the case lately. Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 4 in the series opener, but he did hit his 41st homer in their 13-1 loss to the Orioles on Thursday.

However, Saturday will be a chance for LA to pounce on a left-hander in Weathers who has been pitching very poorly. They will be looking to do damage on his heater, which has been a pitch he hasn’t been able to keep down in the zone.
Padres vs Angels Prediction
Although Weathers is quite unreliable, Suarez has an ERA over six when pitching at home. San Diego finally won a game and I expect them to keep rolling here.
Pick: San Diego Padres -1.5 (-105)
