A huge series begins on Friday between the San Diego Padres (74-65, 30-34 away) and Los Angeles Dodgers (88-53, 46-23 home) at Dodger Stadium. First-pitch is scheduled for 10:10 PM EST. It will be the battle of two quality arms, with Joe Musgrove taking the mound for San Diego and Julio Urias getting the ball for LA.
Since both of these teams are in the NL West, they’ve already met on numerous occasions in 2021. While the Dodgers have won three straight against the Padres, Jayce Tingler’s squad captured four consecutive victories versus LA prior to that. In total, San Diego has a slight edge in the season series, winning seven out of 13.

Los Angeles Dodgers | -170 | -1.5 (+120) | Un 8 (-110) |

Probable Pitchers
Musgrove has undoubtedly been the ace of San Diego’s rotation this year, leading the way with a stellar 2.87 ERA. Frankly, he’s been their only consistent starter. The righty has also gone 10-8 while striking out 173 batters in 153.2 innings of work. Musgrove’s command has been terrific as well, allowing just 38 walks. The last few outings for him have been lights out. Musgrove faced his former team on September 4th, the Houston Astros, and limited them to a mere two runs across 5.1 frames. In his last three appearances, the 28-year-old has given up only three earned runs combined.
Joe Musgrove has arguably been the @Padres most consistent starting pitcher this season! After making history earlier this year, @itsFatherJoe44 turned in another huge performance going the distance against the Angels on Aug. 27!#PadresPOV 📽️ | #HungryForMore pic.twitter.com/F0fG9YGktZ

Musgrove has faced the Dodgers twice this season, compiling a 2.00 ERA. However, their current lineup is hitting a career .277 off him, which is definitely respectable. Musgrove’s last start on the road was a complete game shutout at Angel Stadium and he’ll be looking to put forward a similar performance on Friday.
Musgrove vs Urias
10-8 | Record | 16-3 |
2.87 | ERA | 3.11 |
153.2 | Innings Pitched | 156.1 |
173 | SO | 168 |
38 | BB | 29 |
Urias leads the major in wins with a 16-3 record for the Dodgers to go along with a sharp 3.11 ERA. Just like his counterpart on Friday, Urias is a strikeout machine who pounds the zone and barely gives up free passes, evident by his numbers above. For an LA rotation that has dealt with injury problems throughout the course of the year, the 25-year-old has given Dave Roberts reliability alongside Walker Buehler and deadline acquisition Max Scherzer.
Julio Urías has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight straight starts. His ERA over those eight games is 1.42.

In Urias’s last outing, he limited the San Francisco Giants to one run across 5.2 innings as the Dodgers rolled to a 6-1 victory. In the month of August alone, where he made five starts, the left-hander compiled a ridiculous 1.38 ERA. The Padres are familiar with Urias, facing him twice this season. He’s actually struggled against them with a 6.00 ERA. Urias also pitches slightly worse at Dodger Stadium.

Although the NL West crown is far out of reach for San Diego, they still have a shot at the Wild Card, sitting a game ahead of the Cincinnati Reds for the final spot right now. The Padres have been playing better baseball as of late, going 6-4 in their last 10 while winning three of four contests.

LA has a Wild Card spot in the bag, but their eyes are set on the divisional title. The Giants are currently two games above them and unfortunately, the Dodgers recently dropped two of three against San Fran last weekend. Los Angeles heads into this Padres series on a two-game losing streak but they do play very well at home.
Padres vs Dodgers Prediction
With two top-tier pitchers on the hill, this should be a very low-scoring contest. Musgrove and Urias have both been dominant over the last month, which makes it hard to pick a team to win the series opener. But, there’s significant value in the “under” in runs, considering the low ERA’s these guys possess. This is definitely a solid bet.
Pick: Under 8 (-110)
