  • The San Diego Padres are -235 away favorites over the Arizona Diamondbacks in this game between NL West rivals on Wednesday, September 1
  • San Diego has won three straight and five of eight games Arizona
  • The losing team has been shutout in three of the past seven games between these two teams

Their recent results against the Arizona Diamondbacks serve as a pretty fair barometer of the turnaround in fortunes for the San Diego Padres.

Two weeks ago, San Diego came to Arizona and dropped three of four games. With a win on Wednesday, the Padres will sweep this three-game set from the hometown Diamondbacks.

Oddsmakers are giving that outcome the nod of approval. San Diego is being established as the -235 favorite in Wednesday’s game. The Padres are 24-23 as an away favorite this season.

Right-hander Darvish has lost his last six decisions. He’s won once since June 4. He’s faced Arizona four times this season.

This will be his third start against the D-backs since August 7. Darvish is 0-1 with a  5.31 ERA in 20.1 innings pitched this season against Arizona. The Diamondbacks have hit four homers off him in 2021.

For his career, though, Darvish is 3-2 with a 3.88 ERA over nine starts when facing Arizona. He’s 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA in four starts at Chase Field. Overall, Darvish is exactly 22-22 through his past four seasons.

Weaver is in the bottom 2% of the league in exit velocity (91.9). He’s scheduled to make his first start for the Diamondbacks since May 16. Weaver ended up exiting his start that day after four innings with what the team classified as right shoulder discomfort.

Two days later, the D-backs placed Weaver on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. Eventually, the team would be transferring him to the 60-day injured list on May 28 with a subscapularis strain in the rotator cuff of his right shoulder.

During a rehab stint at Triple-A Reno, Weaver came in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed in MLB’s COVID-19 protocols. He cleared protocols on Monday.

The right-hander is 2-5 with a 3.79 ERA in eight career starts against the Padres. Weaver is 3-6 with a 4.03 ERA in 15 career starts at Chase Field.
