Indians Host Phillies in Late Season Interleague Clash

The Cleveland Indians will be looking to extend a four-game win streak that has returned them to AL wild card contention when they open a three-game interleague series with the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

The Indians are coming off a dominant three-game sweep of Detroit, in which they outscored the Tigers by a wide 16-3 margin, and now enter the weekend deadlocked with Tampa in the battle for the second wild card.

The Indians have rebounded since opening the month on a shaky 3-6 run, posting wins in eight of their past 10. Cleveland has played stingy baseball during the club’s current surge, surrendering just 2.6 runs per game over their past 10 outings, fuelling a steady 11-2 run for the UNDER in runs total betting.

However, consistency has been an issue at times in contests at Progressive Field, where the Indians have claimed victory in just two of their past five series.

The Phillies arrive in Cleveland desperate for wins as they vie to remain in the NL wild card hunt. Philadelphia took two of three from the Atlanta Braves to open a marathon 11-game road trip, but continue to trail the Milwaukee Brewers by four games for the second wild card with just 11 games remaining on the schedule.

Philadelphia has struggled since opening September on a three-game win streak, going 6-8 in their past 14.

Philadelphia has enjoyed steady success in interleague play this season, going 10-6 overall, including an impressive 6-1 record in seven dates away from Citizens Bank Park.

The club has also taken five of six from the Indians in interleague play, all on home turf, but have struggled in past visits to Cleveland, where they have lost three straight, and five of eight since June 2002. With Phillies pitchers Drew Smyly and Jason Vargas set to take the mound this weekend following rocky outings last time out, that trend is set to continue.

Pick: Indians (-285)

Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays Series Price

Team Odds
Boston Red Sox +240
Tampa Bay Rays -285

Red Sox Look to Play Spoiler in Four-Game Set with Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays will try to rebound from a disappointing western road trip when they return home on Friday to open a four-game weekend series with the division rival Boston Red Sox.

Tampa posted a middling 4-4 record on their recent junket, including losses in two of their past three, and now enter the weekend knotted with Cleveland in the AL wild card standings, two games back of Oakland. Tampa Bay’s shaky road trip extends a worrisome stretch, in which they have lost nine of 16 away from Tropicana Field.

However, the Rays have been dominant on home turf, going 10-1 over their past 11 including series wins over Toronto, Baltimore, and Cleveland, and outscoring opponents by a wide 62-32 margin. The Rays have also enjoyed steady success against the Red Sox, winning nine of their past 12 overall meetings, but are just 1-5 in six home dates with Boston this season.

Jhoulys Chacin September 23 Blake Snell

The Red Sox make the southbound journey this weekend looking for answers after going 7-10 in their past 17 to fall out of postseason contention. The club has steadied the ship over the past week, posting wins in four of six, and avoided getting swept by the visiting San Francisco Giants by claiming a 5-4 victory in Thursday’s series finale.

Demoralized by their rapid plunge out of contention, the Red Sox now find themselves relegated to the role of spoiler.

Boston has steadily produced on the road of late, going 11-5 over the club’s past 16, and posting wins in five of their past six road series.

The Red Sox will need better performances than what they’ve received of late from scheduled starters Nathan Eovaldi and Jhoulys Chacin if they are to contain a Rays squad that has averaged over 6.1 runs per game over their past eight outings.

Pick: Rays (-285)
