There is no stipulation that customers must bet on any specific team or game to earn entry into the sweepstakes. But people generally like betting on their home teams, so here are some of the best (and worst) ways to bet on your Tigers this summer.

Detroit Tigers Betting Trends

Category Moneyline Runline Under Record
Record 36-45 43-38 43-35-3
Return on Investment 6.12% 0.68% +12.62%

Data in the table above is from SBD Sharp, which tracks league-wide and team-specific betting trends for MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL.

The Tigers are not, strictly speaking, a “good team”. They’re nine games under .500 and have the third-worst run differential in the American League (-69). But they have been better than expectations, a fact evidenced by the ROI on their moneyline.

If you had bet $100 on Detroit’s moneyline in every game this season, you would be up $496 for the year, despite losing 55.6% of those wagers.

Their runline record (43-38) is, on the surface, far better than their moneyline record.  But since you have to lay shorter odds to bet on Detroit +1.5, the ROI is actually much lower. A $100 wager on their runline in all 81 games would only have returned $55.

The most lucrative way to bet the Tigers this season has been the under. Detroit has gone under in 43 of its 81 games and pushed in another three. Their games have only gone over the run total 35 times.

Betting the under in every game has returned 12.62% on investment. Sticking with $100 wagers, bettors would be $1,022 in the black this season if they had bet the under in all 81 Detroit games.

Their starting pitching has been the biggest catalyst for that trend. Matthew Boyd, derided by this author as the worst starting pitcher in Major League Baseball at the start of the year, has a highly respectable 3.44 ERA in 13 starts. Young casey mize is showing some of the potential that made him the #1-overall pick in 2018, with a 3.46 ERA and 1.13 WHIP in 15 starts. Meanwhile, Spencer Turnbull has a team-best 2.88 ERA in nine starts to go along with a sparkling 0.98 WHIP.

The other major catalyst for the under trend is the abysmal offense, which is literally the worst in the AL (324 runs scored). But we don’t have to focus on that here.

A serious opportunity to bet the under will be coming up in about a week when Mize and the Tigers travel to Arlington to face Kyle Gibson and the Texas Rangers (Wednesday, July 7th).

Gibson has been nothing short of electric this season, sporting a 6-0 record, 2.00 ERA,  and 1.01 WHIP.
