The Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox meet in a decisive Game 4 of the American League Division Series on Monday night. The first-pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST at Fenway Park. Boston pulled out a thrilling 6-4 victory in 13 innings on Sunday thanks to a walk-off two-run homer from Christian Vazquez. Tampa now has their backs against the wall, trailing 2-1 in the series.

The starters aren’t yet known for either team, but we’ll preview the possible candidates below.

Rays vs Red Sox Odds

Team Moneyline Runline Total
Tampa Bay Rays -108 -1.5 (+150) O 9.0 (-112)
Boston Red Sox -108 +1.5 (-182) U 9.0 (-108)

Odds as of October 10th at Fanduel.

Probable Pitchers

Boston was planning to start Nick Pivetta in Game 4, but since he was used out of the bullpen on Sunday, the righty won’t likely get the ball here. Chris Sale and Eduardo Rodriguez both pitched limited innings earlier in the series and are possible candidates to take the hill.

Sale lasted only one inning in Game 2, giving up five earned on four hits. While the southpaw’s struggles in the postseason continue, there is certainly a chance that Cora puts his faith in Sale on Monday. Rodriguez meanwhile, had a short leash in the series opener, getting yanked after one inning after allowing two earned. He should be relatively fresh as well for Game 4 if called upon.

The other option is Martin Perez. The veteran hasn’t yet pitched in the playoffs but did make 22 starts this season, posting a 4.78 ERA and 7-8 record. However, the 30-year-old has come strictly out of the bullpen since early August. Perez isn’t very reliable, but Cora may want to save Sale or E-Rod for Game 5 if it gets to that point.

As for the Rays, Luis Patino or Michael Wacha are the favorites to pitch on Monday. But, Patino did toss 1.1 innings on Sunday and surrendered the game-winning bomb. He has featured out of the pen and in the rotation, posting a 4.31 ERA in 19 games, with 15 being starts this season. The 21-year-old didn’t throw a lot of pitches in Game 3, which means there’s a chance he may be used in this do-or-die contest.

Wacha on the other hand got absolutely lit up in the Rays’ 14-6 loss in Game 2. The right-hander tossed 2.2 innings while giving up six earned runs on nine hits. He made 22 starts in 2021, compiling a 5.27 ERA. Given the limited options for Kevin Cash, the bullpen will probably be in this game relatively early unless Patino or Wacha are dealing.

Brutal Blow For The Rays

It wasn’t a great day for Tampa offensively in Game 3, but they showed great resiliency in the eighth when Wander Franco slugged a solo bomb then Randy Arozarena drove in Manuel Margot with a game-tying double. At that point, it was 4-4, but the Rays proceeded to stay pretty quiet at the plate, striking out 20 times.

Tampa Bay thought they took the lead in the top of the 13th when Kevin Kiemaier drove a double into right field that hit Hunter Renfroe then trickled over the wall. Margot would’ve scored, but he was evidently put back on third base with two outs after further review. Drew Rasmussen was disappointing on the mound, allowing three runs in two innings. But the bullpen bailed him out, with seven different arms holding it down before Patino was tagged for the walk-off homer by Vazquez.

Red Sox Raking

Even though Tampa get Boston at bay after Rasmussen exited, they still banged out 15 hits on the night. Kyle Schwarber went 3 for 5, while Kike Hernandez continues to stay hot, going 3 for 6 with two RBI’s and a home run. Vazquez came up big in the bottom of the 13th as well when he left the yard, but the real star of the show was Pivetta.

The Canadian came in and threw four relief innings in extras and absolutely dealt, allowing just three hits while striking out seven. He kept Boston in the game and gave them a chance to win. Now, the Red Sox head into Monday with an opportunity to book their ticket to the ALCS.

Rays vs Red Sox Game 4 Prediction

There’s a lot of uncertainty with who will pitch for both sides, but I honestly think Boston is going to finish up the series here. The bats are on fire right now and Tampa doesn’t exactly have great options to start in Game 4. Take the Red Sox on the moneyline.

Pick: Boston Red Sox moneyline (-108)
