The Cincinnati Reds (58-89, 29-43 home) once beat the Boston Red Sox (71-75, 34-38 away) in a memorable seven-game World Series in 1975. Neither club will be getting a sniff of the postseason this year, however.

The Red Sox and Reds are playing out the string, and that includes a two-game inter-league series beginning Tuesday.

Boston is 13-2 straight up in the last 15 games against the Reds. The Red Sox are 7-0 straight up in their last seven games at Cincinnati.

Oddsmakers are leaning slightly toward the Red Sox in the betting line on this game. Boston is a -115 road favorite. The Reds are set as -105 home underdogs.

Red Sox vs Reds Probable Pitchers

Red Sox rookie right-hander Brayan Bello tasted victory for the first time as an MLB pitcher on September 3. Working a season-high six innings, he didn’t allow a run and surrendered just three hits en route to a 5-3 win over the Texas Rangers.

However, he’s lost his next two starts against AL rivals Baltimore and the New York Yankees. Bello has struck out 27 batters over his last 25.1 innings pitched.

Bello is 0-2 with a 7.07 ERA in four away appearances this season, including three starts. His WHIP on the road is 1.90 and his strikeouts to walks ratio is 1.60. He’ll be facing the Reds for the first time as an MLB pitcher.

Bello vs Lodolo Stats

Brayan Bello
VS
Nick Lodolo
1-6 Record 4-6
5.10 ERA 3.81
3.77 xERA 3.63
1.70 WHIP 1.27
2.00 SO/W Ratio 3.77

Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo appears to have rediscovered his mojo. He went 0-2 with a 4.40 ERA in August. That came on the heels of a July in which he was 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA.

So far in September, the rookie southpaw is 1-1 with a 2.21 ERA. Lodolo has struck out 31 against one walk in just 20.1 innings of work. He’s punched out 11 hitters in each of his last two starts.

Lodolo is 3-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 10 home starts. He’ll be facing the Red Sox for the first time as an MLB hurler.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Boston’s Yu Chang is the only batter on either club who’s faced the opposing starting pitcher previously in the big leagues. Chang is 0-for-3 against Lodolo.

In head-to-head action this season, Cincinnati’s Matt Reynolds is hitting .500 (3-for-6) against the Red Sox. Aristides Aquino is 2-for-6 (.333).

For Boston, Alex Verdugo is 3-for-7 (.429) with three RBI off of Cincinnati pitching. Rafael Devers is 3-for-8 (.375). Xander Bogaerts is 2-for-6 (.333) with an RBI.

Red Sox vs Reds Prediction

Boston completed a 2-3 homestead on the heels of a 2-4 road trip. Cincinnati is 2-3 SU in the last five games, but 2-9 SU over the past 11 games.

YouTube video

Both Lodolo and Bello are giving off indications that a bright future is ahead for them as MLB pitchers. At this stage of their progression, it would appear that Lodolo is slightly in front of Bello along the learning curve.
