Baseball’s most heated rivalry resumes on Wednesday, May 9th as the Yankees host the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. The two teams have met 2,222 times since 1901, and yet every game they play is a reason for celebration.

That was especially true on Tuesday evening as 45,773 fans descended on the Bronx to cheer their hometown Yankees to a 3-2 victory over the Sox. The game had heroes (Aaron Judge), villains (Joe Kelly), and plenty of fireworks as Giancarlo Stanton homered twice. It was New York’s 16th victory in 17 games and they now find themselves tied for the AL East lead with – who else? – Boston.

Rick Porcello will put his unbeaten record on the line this evening when he takes the mound for the Red Sox. The former Cy Young winner has been sensational in 2018, going 5-0 with a a career-low 2.14 ERA and 0.82 WHIP. Porcello had his best outing of the season on April 12th, when he threw a two-hitter against the Yankees and consistently flummoxed them with his lively sinker.

Taking the mound for the Yankees is Masahiro Tanaka, who is 4-2 with a 4.32 ERA. The 29-year-old right-hander has led the Yankees to victory in each of his last three starts and is 1-0 this season against the Red Sox. His lofty ERA would be a major concern on some squads, but New York scores enough runs to make up for his occasional lapses on the mound.

Rick Porcello will need to bring his best stuff tonight against the Yankees, who have been eating up and spitting out pitchers at an alarming rate. New York leads the Majors in runs and RBI, and ranks in the top five in doubles, home runs, total bases, onbase percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS.

They’re also on one hell of a hot streak. The Yankees have won seven straight and are averaging 5.14 runs during that span. They’re every bit as dangerous as we thought they’d be in Spring Training and appear to be getting better by the day. Porcello will keep this one close, but he won’t be able to silence New York’s bats when it matters most.
