Strong pitching and limited offense ruled out in the Giants vs. Rockies opener on Friday, but Act II might be a bit kinder to both teams’ respective hitters. Chi Chi Gonzalez (5.13 ERA in his career) starts for the Rockies, while Logan Webb (5.35 ERA) gets the nod for the Giants.

Following Friday’s victory as money line favorites, the Giants see the line slide further in their direction for Saturday’s matchup.

About Last Night

The Giants had the perfect man on the mound for their home opener on Friday, as Johnny Cueto shimmied and twisted for 8.2 innings on his way to a dominant outing that yielded a 3-1 win.

The Rockies mustered just four hits, two of which came in the ninth, on a day that was all about the Giants’ dreadlocked veteran.

Of course, Cueto won’t be on the mound for the Giants on Saturday. And given that San Francisco’s offense didn’t look all that imposing against Colorado’s pitchers on Friday — three runs on five hits and seven walks — Game 2 figures to be a clean slate.

Who’s Hot

From what little offense was produced Friday, Buster Posey did enough at the plate to stand out — as he has in other games this season.

The 2012 MVP is having a throwback start to the 2021 season, posting a 1.067 OPS so far through five games. That includes a 2-for-3 effort with a walk and a run scored on Friday.

Perhaps the Giants should consider moving Posey up in the lineup from sixth, where he’s batted three of the first six games.

Get To Know The Starters

Neither Chi Chi Gonzalez nor Logan Webb bring the kind of name recognition to the mound that we saw in Friday’s tilt. So here’s what you should know!

Gonzalez has two relief appearances this season, in which he has allowed three runs on five hits in five innings. So, basically the equivalent of one subpar start. He was out of the majors for 2017-18, and he has a 5.65 ERA in 87.2 innings since his return in 2019.

Webb has a smaller data set overall, but larger since his debut in 2019. He was a fourth-round pick by the Giants and has since underwhelmed, posting ERA totals above 5.00 in all of his seasons so far (though of course this season just began). He lasted 5.1 innings in his lone start this year, yielding seven runs and three hits. Meh.

This game isn’t about the starting pitchers. It’s about whether guys like Posey can continue to step up.

Pick: San Francisco Giants (-190)
