The Detroit Tigers host Cleveland on April 10th at Progressive Field. With Tarik Skubal taking the mound for the Tigers, Detroit are narrow underdogs. This is the fifth meeting of the season between the two teams.

Cleveland lost the first two games, but bounced back to win the third game of the first series and rode a quality start from Zach Plesac to a Friday night win.

Aaron Civale takes the mound for Cleveland for the second time this season. Civale will be looking to build on a strong start earlier in the campaign and continue Cleveland’s good recent run against Detroit. Detroit has lost six of its last 10 against their division rivals.

Tigers vs Cleveland Odds

Team Runline Moneyline at DraftKings Total
Detroit Tigers +1.5 (-134) +150 O 9 (-118)
Cleveland -1.5 (-114) -180 U 9 (-104)

Odds as of Apr 10.

Neither team has stood out thus far this season. Detroit is 4-3 on the runline in 2021, and has been underdogs in all seven of their games to date. The most notable betting trend across the two teams is Cleveland’s knack for low-scoring games. The Ohio ballclub has hit the under in five of its six games.

Civale Searches for Second Win

Civale is in line for his second start of the season against the Tigers. He got the win on April 4th, pitching seven innings and giving up just three earned runs. Civale gave up two homers in his first start, however, which were hit by Akil Baddoo and Nomar Mazara. Baddoo has been a sensation to start this season, getting multiple big hits.

There was a change of approach from Civale in his first outing of the season. He overhauled his delivery during the offseason, and with a change in his arm angle, he’s altered his repertoire. The sinker was thrown 28.9% of the time last season, but it has been replaced by a four-seam fastball, which was Civale’s second-most-used pitch on April 4th. The third-year starter has also added a split-change.

Tigers Career Stats vs Civale

Player AB H HR RBI K AVG.
Akil Baddoo 2 1 1 1 0 .500
Miguel Cabrera 7 1 0 0 1 .143
Jeimer Candelario 6 2 0 0 2 .333
Harold Castro 5 1 0 0 0 .200
Willi Castro 8 1 0 2 2 .125
Niko Goodrum 4 1 1 1 0 .250
Grayson Grenier 2 0 0 0 2 .000
Robbie Grossman 1 0 0 0 0 .000
JaCoby Jones 6 2 0 0 2 .333
Nomar Mazara 7 2 1 3 1 .286
Wilson Ramos 2 1 0 2 0 .500
Victor Reyes 11 4 0 1 3 .364
Jonathan Schoop 10 1 0 0 1 .100

All of these alterations may make Civale a difficult pitcher to project. He’s admitted this will be a bit of a learning curve. Early signs were good, though. Cleveland’s 25-year-old righty also has good history against Cleveland, owning a 2.67 ERA across five appearances.

Skubal Impresses

A bullpen collapse cast a shadow over what was a good start from Skubal on April 4th. He conceded just two earned in 5.1 innings. After struggling with a 5.75 FIP last season, Skubal’s first start of 2021 was a pleasant surprise for the Tigers. He limited hard contact, not giving up any barrelled balls, and held Cleveland to just four hits.

This Cleveland offense isn’t exactly potent. They have only scored more than four runs in a game once so far this season.

Cleveland Career Stats vs Skubal

Civale Gets It Done

Detroit’s offense has mustered just seven runs over their last three games. Cleveland’s run-scoring hasn’t been particularly impressive either, but they will be confident of getting something off Skubal.

With comprehensive changes to his pitch mix and delivery, Civale will be happy to start the campaign against Detroit. He was good in his first outing. Building on that with another quality start seems like a reasonable expectation.

On an admittedly small sample, Detroit has the third-worst bullpen ERA this season. Their relievers have already conceded eight homers. It’s easy to see this game following a similar pattern to the first Civale vs Skubal matchup.

There will be plenty of money on the under given the lack of run-scoring prowess, but Cleveland on the runline is my pick.

Pick: Cleveland -1.5 (-114)
