The Chicago White Sox — on the verge of clinching their first American League Central title since 2008 — take on the Detroit Tigers at 1:10 pm ET, Wednesday, on getaway day of a three-game series at Comerica Park.

The Pale Hose came up short against the Tigers again Tuesday, losing their second straight in the series After going down 4-3 Monday, Detroit beat Chicago 5-3 Tuesday. With Cleveland beating Kansas City on Tuesday, the White Sox’ magic number remains at two.

Chicago holds a 9-6 advantage over Detroit in head-to-head games this season. Tony La Russa’s club is favored against the Motor City Kitties as they look to salvage the series and get halfway closer to their division crown.

Probable Pitchers

On the mound, Chicago’s Reynaldo Lopez (3-3, 3.00) faces Casey Mize (7-8, 3.64).

As for Lopez, the 27-year-old has not tossed any quality starts among his six rotation turns and has only completed five full innings three times this season. La Russa’s club is only 8-9 in his appearances and 3-4 in his starts in 2021. The team winning percentage is slightly above .500 in his his last five appearances, as Chicago has gone 3-2 in that stretch.

Lopez vs Mize Key Stats

Reynaldo Lopez
VS
Casey Mize
3-3 Record 7-8
3.00 ERA 3.64
3.28 xERA 5.15
0.94 WHIP 1.14
3.92 SO/W 2.71

Lopez only managed four innings in his last outing, an eventual 9-3 loss to the Angels last Thursday. The right-hander allowed seven hits, six earned runs and a walk while striking out seven in the defeat.

Lopez is 1-2 with a 3.00 ERA in nine appearances (four starts) at home in 2021. He’s 0-3 with a 4.29 ERA in sox appearances (four starts) in day games.

As for Mize, the 24-year-old former No.1 overall pick has shown flashes this season. 12 of his 28 starts in 2021 have been of the quality vintage — but only one of those has come since August 1st. On the bright side, Detroit has gone 15-13 in games the former Auburn Tiger started. He only went three innings against the Rays in Tampa last Friday, giving up three hits, an earned run and a walk while striking out three in an eventual 7-4 loss.

The rookie righty is 3-5 with a 4.02 ERA in 13 starts at home in 2021. He’s 1-3 with a 3.77 ERA in nine day game starts.

Party in Cleveland?

If Lopez can help lead Chicago to a Hump Day victory, the Pale Hose will likely hop on their team plane to Cleveland and watch their next opponent’s game at the team hotel. If KC beats Cleveland, let the celebration begin.

Tim Anderson has gone 3-for-9 so far in the series, with two runs scored and driven in a run. Luis Robert, though, has been the hottest hitter for the group this month. Robert has gone 30-for-78 (.385) in the final month of the regular season through 18 games.

The players to watch in Chicago’s probable lineup Wednesday are Yasmani Grandal and Yoan Moncada. The pair have combined to go 5-for-14 (.357) against Mize, with each launching a long ball and driving in two runs apiece.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

White Sox Batters Batting Average vs Casey Mize Tigers Batters Batting Average vs Reynaldo Lopez
Tim Anderson .233 Jeimer Candelario .160
Luis Robert .000 Jonathan Schoop .200
Jose Abreu .091 Robbie Grosman .182
Yasmani Grandal .400 Eric Haase .000
Eloy Jimenez .250 Niko Goodrum .217
Yoan Moncada .333 Daz Cameron .000
Leury Garcia .400 Victor Reyes .450

Three probable Tiger bats — not including Miguel Cabrera (who was not in Tuesday’s lineup but may return for the series finale) — have taken Lopez deep. That group includes Jeimer Candelario, Niko Goodrum (twice) and Victor Reyes.

Reyes has particular ownage over Lopez, going 9-for-20 (.450) against him in his career, including a double and triple  — to go along with that dinger — boasting a 1.226 OPS.

Lopez will certainly have to be careful as he navigates his way through the Detroit lineup.

White Sox vs Tigers Pick

Neither starting pitchers’ numbers coming in are particularly intimidating and both squads possess hitters that have been swinging it well of late.

But with Chicago looking for its first victory of the series — and with a chance to clinch a title on the same day, but possibly in another city — I’m fading the home dog in this spot and going with the Pale Hose.

The Pick: White Sox moneyline (-190)
