The New York Yankees (50-45, 22-22 away) are one of seven teams in the American League that have 50+ wins. Unfortunately, five of them happen to play in the American League East, leaving the Bronx Bombers in last place in their division.
They’re still in the thick of the Wild Card race, and they’ll try to stay in the picture when they play the second of a three-game set against the LA Angels (47-48, 25-22 home).
LA took the first of the set with a 4-3 win in 10 innings on Monday.
Action gets underway Tuesday (July 18) at 9:38pm ET from Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. You can watch the game live on MLB Network.

New York Yankees | -116 | -1.5 (+150) | Ov 9 (-110) |
Los Angeles Angels | -102 | +1.5 (-182) | Un 9 (-110) |

Both teams are struggling. The Yanks have just two wins in their last eight games, while the Angels picked up just their third win in their last 14 outings.

Probable Pitchers
Since pitching a perfect game three starts ago, Yankees pitcher Domingo German has continued to limit the runs, despite not picking up a win in his last two outings.
He pitched six innings of 1-hit ball, allowing just one earned run while striking out nine in a game the Yankees eventually lost to the Cubs 7-4.

Prior to that, he lasted 4.1 innings but scattered nine hits, allowing just two earned runs, in a game New York won 6-4 over the Orioles.
That’s just three earned runs in his last three starts covering 19.1 innings of work, with three walks and 23 strikeouts. Only five Angles have ever faced German, with none having more than four at-bats against him.
German vs Sandoval Stats
5-5 | Record | 4-7 |
4.32 | ERA | 4.41 |
1.07 | WHIP | 1.47 |
.275 | OBA | .321 |
3.29 | SO/W Ratio | 2.39 |
It’s been a tale of two seasons for Patrick Sandoval. In his first seven starts, he went 3-1 and sported an ERA of 2.93.
Since then, though, it’s been a disaster: Sandoval is 1-6 over his last 10 starts, with an ERA that sits at 4.41.
His last outing was encouraging, however, as he went five innings of 2-hit ball, surrendering just one earned run.
Sandoval did walk four but struck out five, getting a no-decision in a game LA eventually lost 6-3 to the Padres.
New York and Los Angeles Players to Watch
All eyes can and should be on Angels’ star Shohei Ohtani. The all-star has been on fire since the all-star break, picking up hits in four straight games and homering in three straight.
On Monday night, he picked up three hits, ripping a 2-run shot to bring the Angels back into it, his league-leading 35th dinger of the season in game 93. He is well on pace to catch and pass his career high of 46 set in 2021.

For the Yanks, their offense has sputtered since Aaron Judge hurt his toe on June 3. His 19 home runs and 40 RBI still lead the team. In June, New York’s team slash line was .208/.273/.379 and through July it’s currently just .237/.316.393.
Gleyber Torres and Anthony Volpe each have 13 home runs, while Anthony Rizzo is second in RBI with 39.

Yankees vs Angels Prediction
Los Angeles starts the day a distant 5.5 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays for the third and final Wild Card berth, but there are five teams ahead them, including New York, who are 2.5 games behind Toronto.
If there’s one thing New York does well, it’s bounce back from a loss. The Yankees are a sparkling 26-17 coming off an L, the third-best betting mark in baseball. They’re not bad as a road favorite either, sporting a 12-9 mark.
Yankees vs Angels 2023 H2H Results
Date | Away Team | Home Team | Result |
---|---|---|---|
July 17 | Yankees | Angels | LAA 4-3 / F10 |
April 20 | Angels | Yankees | NYY, 9-3 |
April 19 | Angels | Yankees | NYY, 3-2 |
April 18 | Angels | Yankees | LAA, 5-2 |
Los Angeles does function as one of the best home ‘dogs in the bigs, albeit at a small sample, going 6-3 in nine games this season.
With German on the mound and Sandoval coming off a solid start against a not-so-potent Yankees roster, it’s probably best to take the total here. The under has hit in seven of the last 10 meetings, and all signs point to another low-scoring affair.
Pick: UNDER 9 runs (-110)
