Following a thrilling contest on Thursday, The New York Yankees (75-52, 36-27 away) and the Oakland Athletics (70-58, 35-30 home) continue their four-game set on Friday night, with first-pitch at 9:40 PM EST in the Bay Area.

NY won a 7-6 thriller in the series opener thanks to a clutch RBI single from Aaron Judge in the top of the ninth to put his team ahead for good. With the victory, the Yankees have now won an impressive 12 straight games for the first time in 60 years and have also posted a 5-1 record in their last six meetings with Oakland.

The Yanks will hand the ball to their ace Gerrit Cole, while the A’s counter with southpaw Sean Manaea.

Amid their hot streak, the Yankees are a -150 favorite. This is an extremely important series for both teams as they battle it out in the American League Wild Card race.

Probable Pitchers

Cole takes the hill for New York on Friday after two strong starts following his stint on the IL due to COVID-19. The hard-throwing righty dominated the Minnesota Twins last Sunday, tossing six innings of scoreless baseball en route to his 12th victory of the season. Cole is currently sporting a 2.92 ERA and has struck out an astounding 191 hitters in 142 innings while allowing only 30 walks. He’s been an absolute workhorse for Aaron Boone and currently boasts the third-best ERA in the American League.

While the 30-year-old hasn’t faced the Athletics in 2021, Cole typically does well against them, posting a 3.02 ERA and 4-1 record in eight career starts. Oakland’s current lineup is very familiar with the former Cy Young winner, but they’re hitting a mere .144.

Cole vs Manaea Stats

Gerrit Cole
VS
Sean Manaea
12-6 Record 8-8
2.92 ERA 3.77
142.0 Innings Pitched 139.1
191 SO 151
30 BB 36

Manaea has put together a respectable campaign for the A’s, compiling a 3.77 ERA in 25 starts. He’s tossed two complete games as well, but the lefty has struggled in his last few outings. Manaea has surrendered 17 earned runs across his last four starts and lasted only 4.2 innings against the San Francisco Giants last weekend after allowing two runs and three walks. Command has been an issue for him recently, giving up seven free passes in his previous three appearances alone.

Manaea has already faced the Yankees this season and actually did pretty well, striking out 11 batters across 5.1 frames of two-run ball. In five career starts against NY, he has a 3.60 ERA. Although they’re hitting just .185 off Manaea, he will need to get ahead in the count and limit his mistakes because the Bronx Bombers are red-hot right now.

Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers

Athletics Hitters Batting Average vs Cole Yankees Hitters Batting Average vs Manaea
Elvis Andrus .300 Joey Gallo .250
Mark Canha .100 Brett Gardner .000
Matt Chapman .222 Aaron Judge .333
Jed Lowrie .231 DJ LaMahieu .400
Starling Marte .000 Rougned Odor .200
Mitch Moreland .071 Anthony Rizzo .000
Matt Olson .000 Gary Sanchez .500
N/A N/A Giancarlo Stanton .000
N/A N/A Gio Urshela .167
N/A N/A Luka Voit .000

Unlike the Yankees, Oakland is on a brutal losing skid. They’ve dropped five straight and are just 2-8 in their last 10 games. It couldn’t be a worse time for the A’s to go cold either because Bob Melvin’s squad had a chance to close in on the Astros who were also struggling to win ballgames for a small period recently.

New York is currently the hottest team in baseball by far. They simply can’t do any wrong, with their offense and pitching staff thriving. In fact, since the All-Star break, the Yanks have a 29-9 record and the second-best ERA during that span at 3.17. Luke Voit, Giancarlo Stanton, and Aaron Judge have all come alive in the second half, giving the Bronx Bombers much-needed production at the plate in clutch moments.

Yankees vs Athletics Prediction

New York is absolutely rolling, while Oakland is not. However, with two top-notch arms on the mound, this should be a close game. Considering the opponent averages on each side against Cole and Manaea, there shouldn’t be a lot of runs scored. The ‘Under’ has also been hit in six of the last games between the Yanks and A’s. There’s a decent chance that happens again.

Pick: Under 8 Runs (-115)
