It’s the battle of The Big Apple on Saturday as the New York Yankees (78-63, 38-32 away) take a trip across the city to face the New York Mets (71-71, 42-27 home). First-pitch is scheduled for 7:45 PM EST. The Mets took the first game of this series on Friday, annihilating the Yanks, 10-3. Tyler Megill threw an absolute gem while Javier Baez led the way at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBI’s.
Heading into Saturday, the Bronx Bombers have now lost seven straight. On the mound, Corey Kluber and Taijuan Walker will face off for their respective ballclubs. It will also be a special night because of the 20-year anniversary of 9/11.

Probable Pitchers
Kluber gets the ball here and will be hoping to turn around New York’s atrocious losing streak. He’s made 12 starts for the Yankees this season, going 4-3 with a 3.66 ERA. Kluber even threw a no-hitter back in May but then went on the 60-day IL shortly after. The veteran righty finally returned to the mound on August 30th, but he got a rude awakening from the Angels, lasting just four innings and surrendering five earned runs.

His most recent outing on September 5th wasn’t great either, tossing 3.2 frames while allowing four hits and two earned against the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets are a very unfamiliar opponent for Kluber, considering he’s pitched the entirety of his career in the American League. The 35-year-old has only faced them twice and has compiled a dismal 6.55 ERA. To make matters worse, Kluber has a 4.50 ERA on the road in 2021.
Kluber vs Walker
4-3 | Record | 7-9 |
3.69 | ERA | 4.15 |
61 | Innings Pitched | 138.2 |
66 | SO | 129 |
28 | BB | 49 |
In a Mets rotation that has been ravaged with injuries, Walker has been one of their only healthy arms. However, he hasn’t exactly been the most consistent, posting a 4.15 ERA in 25 starts. The first half was outstanding for him as he was named an All-Star, but it’s been a much different story since mid-July. In his most recent appearance, Walker was lit up for six earned runs by the Washington Nationals, exiting after just 4.1 innings of work. In fact, he’s allowed 10 runs in his last three outings. Command has definitely been an issue for the 29-year-old this season, issuing 49 free passes in 138.2 frames.
Lots of good energy coming from the team right now, and deservedly so, winning eight of nine.

But, this is a chance for Walker to bounce back against a Yankees offense that is severely struggling right now. On the other hand, though, it’s only a matter of time until they break out which means he must limit the mistakes. Walker already faced NY earlier this year and has a career 3.24 ERA against them in five starts.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Mets Hitters | Batting Average vs Kluber |
---|---|
Michael Conforto | .667 |
James McCann | .000 |
Kevin Pillar | .333 |
Jonathan Villar | .000 |
Yankees Hitters | Batting Average vs Walker |
Joey Gallo | .000 |
Brett Gardner | .333 |
Aaron Judge | .250 |
DJ LaMahieu | .273 |
Rougned Odor | .200 |
Anthony Rizzo | .000 |
Gary Sanchez | .000 |
Giancarlo Stanton | .429 |
Gleyber Torres | .000 |
Gio Urshela | .333 |
Luke Voit | .286 |
Tyler Wade | .1000 |
The Yankees just got swept by the Blue Jays and now sit just a half-game ahead of Toronto for the final Wild Card spot. In the month of September alone, Aaron Boone’s squad is batting a dismal .205 while posting a 4.83 ERA. Needless to say, the Yanks need to improve in a hurry with the playoffs quickly approaching.
The Yankees are 2-11 since their 13-game winning streak.
They are the 2nd team in MLB history to go 2-11 or worse in the 13 games immediately following a single-season win streak of 13+ games (1991 Rangers).

The Mets have been playing a lot better as of late, going 6-4 in their last 10 games. The NL East crown is still in reach as they sit five games back of the Atlanta Braves, but the Wild Card is the most realistic situation. After Friday’s win, New York now trails the Padres by 4.5 games. Following this Yankees series, the Mets have two huge matchups with the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, who are both vying for a WC berth.

Yankees vs Mets Prediction
Although Kluber hasn’t pitched well against the Mets in his career, I do think he is going to be the one to help the Yankees turn around their fortunes. Expect a breakout performance from the Bronx Bombers as their offense gets to Taijuan Walker and puts some runs on the board early.
Pick: New York Yankees moneyline (-130)
