After a huge win on Saturday, the New York Yankees (88-67, 43-34 away) will be looking for the sweep over their AL East rivals, the Boston Red Sox (88-67, 49-31 home) in the series finale on Sunday night at Fenway Park. The first pitch is set for 7:08 PM EST.
New York has come up with some timely hits through the first two games of the matchup, with Giancarlo Stanton clubbing a go-ahead grand slam on Saturday to complete the comeback for the Bronx Bombers in a 5-3 victory.
In the final contest, it will be two lefties battling it out on the hill in Jordan Montgomery and Eduardo Rodriguez.

Probable Pitchers
Montgomery will be tasked with the start here as he aims to continue an impressive run. The southpaw has a 3.09 ERA in his last seven outings and is coming off back-to-back tremendous appearances. He limited the Rangers to just one run across 5.2 frames then just days before, Montgomery put up a practically identical stat line against the Orioles. In that start, he also struck out a mind-boggling 12 Baltimore hitters. On the year, 28-year-old has gone 6-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 149.2 innings, racking up 155 K’s in the process.

While his 0-2 record doesn’t exactly show promise, Montgomery has pitched relatively well against Boston this season, compiling a 3.63 ERA in four outings. Given the way he’s throwing the ball right now as well, the Yanks wouldn’t want any other arm on the mound as they look to overtake the Red Sox in the Wild Card race. However, he does have a 3.90 ERA on the road.
Montgomery vs Rodriguez
6-6 | Record | 11-8 |
3.55 | ERA | 4.97 |
149.2 | Innings Pitched | 146.2 |
155 | SO | 170 |
48 | BB | 43 |
Rodriguez is having a rather tough year, posting a 4.97 ERA in 29 starts. His 11-8 record is respectable, but the left-hander has been hit around quite a bit. However, he is fresh off two solid outings, giving up just three runs combined. He limited the Mets to two earned despite not having his best stuff then also tossed six frames of one-run baseball against the Mariners on September 13th.

Rodriguez is typically brilliant at throwing strikes and racking up the K’s and he’s enjoyed success vs. New York this season, going 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in four appearances. In fact, they’re hitting just .206 off Rodriguez. But, with their bats red-hot right now, he will need to be very sharp. One negative heading into Sunday though is that Rodriguez has pitched awful at Fenway, posting a 6.16 ERA in 12 outings.
Batting Average vs Starting Pitchers
Red Sox Hitters | Batting Average vs Montgomery | Yankees Hitters | Batting Average vs Rodriguez |
---|---|---|---|
Christian Arroyo | .500 | Joey Gallo | .500 |
Xander Bogaerts | .458 | Brett Gardner | .269 |
Bobby Dalbec | .250 | Kyle Higashioka | .250 |
Rafael Devers | .235 | Aaron Judge | .260 |
Enrique Hernandez | .000 | DJ LaMahieu | .300 |
Jose Iglesias | .200 | Rougned Odor | .333 |
J.D. Martinez | .059 | Anthony Rizzo | .000 |
Kevin Plawecki | .000 | Gary Sanchez | .188 |
Hunter Renfroe | .400 | Giancarlo Stanton | .071 |
Kyle Schwarber | .000 | Gleyber Torres | .364 |
Travis Shaw | .250 | Gio Urshela | .316 |
Christian Vazquez | .375 | Luke Voit | .385 |
Alex Verdugo | .133 | N/A | N/A |
The Yankees have now won five straight and look to be finding their groove at the best possible time. The top WC spot is now essentially anyone’s and if NY can collect another victory here, they will be ahead of Boston in the race. The Bronx Bombers’ bats are really starting to come alive as well, scoring 27 runs across the last four contests.

Before the Yanks rolled into the town, the Red Sox were winners of seven in a row. But some poor pitching has hurt them in this series, most notable from Nathan Eovaldi then the bullpen on Saturday. Sunday’s series finale is huge for Boston before they take on the Orioles and Nationals to wrap up the season.
Yankees vs Red Sox Prediction
Just based on the two starting pitchers, the Yanks certainly look to have the advantage here. However, even though Rodriguez has struggled at home, I do think he will continue to impress against New York and give his team a chance to grab a crucial victory here. Take the Red Sox on the moneyline.
Pick: Boston Red Sox moneyline -125
