Boxing Odds – Will Mayweather-McGregor Happen?

Conor McGregor talks, a lot. With so many words coming out of his mouth, sometimes you forget what he did and didn’t say. But I’m pretty sure one of his consistent messages is about wanting to be the “greatest fighter of all time.” I guess he never specified that meant in mixed martial arts.

After McGregor was stripped of his UFC 200 rematch with Nate Diaz for blowing off press obligations, Ireland’s biggest export since U2 has been stirring up all sorts of storylines. His latest undertaking is the most ambitious yet: the UFC star has been trying to coax boxer Floyd Mayweather out of retirement and into the ring.

The potential fight has been blown off by most as something that will never happen. (Just look at how long it took to finally get Mayweather to fight Pacquiao.) Unfortunately, the story got a big shot in the arm this week, when loudmouth-for-hire Colin Cowherd said he had intel the fight would take place in September.

Now, Cowherd is the furthest thing from a reliable (or respected) source; but this latest rumor has given more life to a dream that was already going to be hard to kill. But why do people want McGregor to venture into the uncharted world of boxing anyways? Wading into the waters of the welterweight category of the UFC was difficult enough for him; changing sports and taking on the most technically sound boxer in the world is just asking for an ass kicking … at least on the scorecard. (Mayweather hasn’t knocked anyone out since Twitter took off.)

McGregor wants more money, sure. But he’s not an idiot. The cut Mayweather demands for his fights is enormous, and McGregor has laughed off the numbers being leaked so far. If the parties are even discussing a possible fight, McGregor and the UFC will kiss and make up long before an agreement is ever reached.

Still, even though a fight is unlikely to happen, we’d be remiss if we didn’t pull our own Cowherd and try to capitalize on the flavor of the week. So here are some odds of a Mayweather-McGregor fight going down.

Odds on who McGregor’s next fight will come against:

  • Nate Diaz: 2/3
  • Frankie Edgar: 4/1
  • Rafael dos Anjos: 7/1
  • Jose Aldo: 9/1
  • Floyd Mayweather: 35/1

Odds of a Mayweather vs McGregor boxing match ever happening: 24/1

Odds to win a Mayweather vs McGregor fight (boxing):

  • Mayweather: 1/50
  • McGregor: 22/1

Odds to win a Mayweather vs McGregor fight (with light sabers):

  • McGregor: 5/7
  • Mayweather: 11/9
