Can MacDonald Beat Lima Again?

Rory MacDonald (21-5-1) is coming off of a decision win over Neiman Gracie to advance to the finals. Before that, he had a controversial draw against Jon Fitch in the opening round, but since he was the champion, he advanced to the second round. In his Bellator career, the Canadian also has wins over Douglas Lima and Paul Daley with a notable loss to Gegard Mousasi for the middleweight title. In the UFC, he fought for the welterweight title and lost but scored impressive wins over Tyron Woodley, B.J. Penn, Demian Maia, and Nate Diaz.

Douglas Lima (31-7) had a spectacular knockout win over Michael Page in his last fight to hand the Englishman his first pro loss. In the opening round, he submitted Andrey Koreshkov. Lima has other notable wins over Paul Daley, Lorenz Larkin, and Ben Saunders. He is also the former welterweight champion and lost the title to MacDonald in 2018.

MacDonald is the better overall fighter, but has not looked good of late and even contemplated retirement. Following his draw over Jon Fitch, he said: “I don’t have that killer inside. I don’t know. It’s really hard to explain but I hesitate a little bit now. I don’t know what to say. It wasn’t my best performance.”

Although he is uncertain about his fighting future, given that MacDonald won the first fight with Lima (Jan. 2018) and is now vying for $1 million, he should have both confidence and motivation.

In terms of strategy, he will have to rely on his jab and takedowns as he did in the first fight. Lima, meanwhile, will try to use his leg kicks to keep MacDonald at range.

This should be another extremely close fight, and I believe the odds should be much closer to pick’em. In the end, I believe we will hear ‘And Still’ as MacDonald does enough to win a decision.

Pick: Rory MacDonald (+155)
