The Philadelphia 76ers and Atlanta Hawks play Game 4 of their second round playoff series on Monday June 14th. Philadelphia has taken a 2-1 lead in the series following their Game 1 loss, but was dealt another injury blow in Game 3.
The Sixers broke a long home winning streak for the Hawks. Adjustments have been made by Doc Rivers which have worked wonders, and the Hawks have had no answer for the sheer size of the Sixers’ big three. Philly is favored by 3.5 points and they boast a 15-10-2 ATS record as road favorites through the regular season and playoffs.

Injury Report
Joel Embiid (partially torn meniscus) remains on the injury report. The Sixers are playing the same tune ahead of every game in this series, but it seems unlikely Embiid will miss any time. He’s averaging 35.5 minutes per game so far this series despite Philly leaving it until the last minute to announce his availability.
Danny Green (calf strain) left Game 3 and will not return in this series. Green will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks. Furkan Korkmaz stepped up in a big way in Green’s absence, playing over 27 minutes. The sharp-shooting wing will likely get the start in Game 4 with Doc Rivers using Matisse Thybulle as a matchup defensive option off the bench.
The Hawks have their own injury problems. Cam Reddish (Achilles) is no closer to returning. Brandon Goodwin is out for the year with a respiratory condition. De’Andre Hunter, an ideal option to throw at Ben Simmons, is having surgery on his meniscus and will miss the remainder of the postseason.
76ers vs Hawks Projected Lineups
Ben Simmons | PG | Trae Young |
Seth Curry | SG | Bogdan Bogdanovic |
Furkan Korkmaz | SF | Solomon Hill |
Tobias Harris | PF | John Collins |
Joel Embiid | C | Clint Capela |
Simmons Changes Everything
The Sixers are a different team when Ben Simmons attacks like he did in the second half of Game 3. Six of Simmons’ 21 field goal attempts for the series came in the second half. Though still struggling from the line, he wasn’t afraid of contact, and he was the driving force in a dominant 34-19 third quarter from Philly.
Attacking Bogdan Bogdanovic, Solomon Hill or John Collins, the Hawks don’t have the bodies to throw at Simmons. He was spinning past people in the post and blowing by everyone in transition. When the Sixers get that version of Simmons, they look every bit like title contenders.

He led the effort on Trae Young at the other end, too. There’s an element of knowing what they’ll get from Joel Embiid. Simmons is the greatest variable among the Sixers’ starters. When he’s like he was in the second half of Game 3, they are an incredibly difficult team to beat, and particularly for this Hawks roster without De’Andre Hunter.
Free Throw Battle
Embiid has 46 free throw attempts in this series. That’s 19 more than Young. Embiid led the league in free throw attempts in the regular season, while Young was fourth. Albeit not the prettiest part of the series, the free throw contest between the two key offensive players was always going to be important.

Some of this can be attributed to Philly’s defense on Young. Others may argue the Sixers’ complaints about the whistle in Game 1 have played a part. On the other end of the floor, though, it’s clear that the Hawks cannot guard Embiid.
In Clint Capela’s defense, he’s not the first big man to be made to look very small by the Cameroonian. The Hawks have been forced to throw double and triple teams at Embiid, and it has often resulted in free throws. Embiid shot 16 times from the stripe in Game 3.

Atlanta needs to show better discipline against Embiid if they are to be competitive in Game 4.
Sixers Move A Step Closer
Some bizarre defensive strategies and white-hot shooting from the Hawks perhaps gave a misleading impression of this series in Game 1. The Sixers surged back when Rivers made tweaks. Embiid, even with a torn meniscus, looks like the guy who finished second in MVP voting.

Green will be missed defensively, but he made just one of his nine threes in the series. Korkmaz and Thybulle are good options for Rivers depending on the game state, and George Hill has given Philly some good minutes off the bench.
The Sixers are the pick here – they have been by far the better team over the last two games.
Pick: Philadelphia 76ers -3.5 (-112)
