The Rockets’ impressive first half of the season has been one of the most-surprising storylines of the year. Their win total has jumped almost double-digits from opening night, all the way to 50.5. But they’ve showed expected signs of regression lately. Houston was crushed 107-96 at home by Detroit on Monday. While the Pistons are certainly improved compared to last season, they’re still a .500 team that ranks in the bottom half of the league in Net Rating (-1.0, 17th).
As is usually the case when Houston loses, the offense went ice-cold against Detroit, shooting just 39.4% from the field. Fred VanVleet (15.0 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 5.9 APG) had a team-high 20 points. Leading scorer Jalen Green (21.5 PPG, 4.4 RPG, 2.7 APG) had 19 but was just 8-of-21 from the floor. Uncharacteristically, the Rockets were badly out-rebounded (52-39). Houston still ranks #1 in the NBA in rebound percentage (52.8).
While the Rockets were busy losing to the Pistons, the Cavs were busy dominating another quality opponent, routing Kevin Durant’s Suns 118-92. Donovan Mitchell (23.3 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 4.5 APG) had another standout performance with a game-high 33 in the win. He’s now scored 30-plus in three of his last four, with the lone exception being a 134-114 loss at OKC when he was limited to just 21 minutes.
Cleveland continues to rank #1 in the NBA in effective field-goal percentage (58.8) and Offensive Rating (121.1).
The Cavs will continue to play without forwards Evan Mobley (18.6 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 2.9 APG) and Isaac Okoro (5.8 PPG, 2.1 RPG) on Wednesday night. Mobley has been out since the aforementioned loss to OKC last Thursday. Cleveland has gone 2-0 without him, including the lopsided win over the Suns and an even-more-impressive 124-117 road win at the Timberwolves.
Caris LeVert () is also listed as questionable with a wrist injury. On the Houston side, Jabari Smith Jr (11.9 PPG, 6.5 RPG) is out with a fractured hand. The Rockets are otherwise healthy.
CLE vs HOU Player Props
NBA player props from DraftKings Sportsbook on January 22.
Donovan Mitchell leads the Cavaliers/Rockets player props with a point total of 25.5. Darius Garland and Jalen Green are also over the 20-point plateau at 21.5.
Jarrett Allen has the highest rebound total at 10.5, while Houston’s frontcourt duo of Aleperen Sengun and Amen Thompson are both at 9.5.
Best Available Cavaliers vs Rockets Odds
Most sportsbooks list the Cavaliers as 2.5-point road favorites. The lone exception at the moment is FanDuel, which has the spread half a point higher at Houston +3 (-112). The best odds on Cleveland covering 2.5 are currently at Caesars (-105). Counterintuitively, Caesars has the longest moneyline price on a Houston victory (+126) while FanDuel has the best odds on the Cleveland moneyline (-146).
The game total only shows a half-point range, as well. The best over option is over 229.0 (-110) at FanDuel. The best under option is under 229.5 (-108) at DraftKings.
The NBA public betting splits on Wednesday show the public hammering the Cavaliers against the spread. As of 1:24 pm ET, Cleveland was getting 70% of ATS handle and 80% of ATS bets. The public also loves the Cavaliers on the moneyline, putting 74% of moneyline handle on Cleveland to win straight-up.
