There’s a great shirt that’s been circulating around the internet for some time now that reads coffee is for closers. It appears Luka Doncic took that phrase to heart. After pounding two to four shots of espresso before his last game, he couldn’t keep track, Doncic went out and delivered the fourth 40-point triple double of his career.

That helped the Mavericks (7-5, 6-1 home) snap a two-game losing streak, and oddsmakers are bullish on their chances of getting another win on Tuesday versus the Clippers (7-6, 4-2 away). Dallas opened up as the home chalk in the NBA odds, as they chase their seventh victory in their own building this season.

Dallas Mavericks Betting Analysis

Doncic’s final total in the Mavs 117-112 victory over the Trail Blazers on Saturday is straight out of a video game. 42 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists. In the process, he became only the sixth player in NBA history to record at least four 40-point triple doubles.

The performance follows a pair of disappointing outings, in which he struggled from the field. The top-two NBA MVP odds contender shot just 17-of-50 from the field in back-to-back losses to the Magic and Wizards, and was held under 30 points for the first two times this season.

Doncic complained of fatigue in those two defeats, but he was flying around against Portland. The extra attention he drew opened up plenty of easy looks for his teammates, and Spencer Dinwiddie and Christian Wood were the major beneficiaries with 20 and 19 points respectively.

Dallas enters play as one of the few teams ranked top-10 in both offensive and defensive rating. Offensively, they boast the fifth highest effective field goal percentage, and are the second most efficient team from inside the three-point line.

Defensively, they yield the fourth fewest points per game, and only one team allows less threes per night. They average the third most steals per contest, and take care of the ball at the other end averaging the sixth fewest giveaways.

Los Angeles Clippers Betting Analysis

Los Angeles meanwhile, was in action on Monday night following a 110-95 loss to Brooklyn on the weekend. The defeat snapped a two-game winning streak, and scoring was an issue as it’s been all season.

The Clippers shot just 40% against the Nets, while failing to reach 100 points for the fifth time in 13 games. LA committed 18 turnovers, while recording five fewer assists than the Nets.

Paul George led the way offensively with 17 points, but shot just 23.8% from the field. The loss was only the Clippers second since Halloween, but the offense certainly can’t take credit for much of their recent success. LA enters play ranked last in scoring and offensive rating.

Defense is where their bread is buttered, as only the Suns and Bucks boast a higher rating in their own end. The Clippers rank fifth in scoring defense, and are holding enemy shooters to a 44.9% field goal percentage, the third lowest mark in the league.

On the injury front, Kawhi Leonard is back participating in 5-on-5 workouts, but still isn’t ready to return from his nagging knee injury. Leonard missed his 11th straight game on Monday in Houston, and will sit versus Dallas as well.

Clippers vs Mavericks Prediction

LA’s combination of superb defense and abysmal offense has led to an abundance of low scoring games. No team in the NBA has seen their games fall short of the total more often than the Clippers, as the under is 11-2 in their contests.

Tuesday’s matchup with Dallas should underwhelm offensively as well, especially on the LA side. The Mavs defense is on par with LA’s, while the Clippers tired legs on the back end of a back-to-back won’t help their offensive prospects.

Team Possessions Per Game – Bottom 5

Rank Team Possessions/Game
26 Brooklyn Nets 101.2
27 Phoenix Suns 101.0
28 Portland Trail Blazers 100.6
29 Philadelphia 76ers 100.0
30 Dallas Mavericks 99.9

Another reason to expect a low scoring affair is the pace at which both teams play at. LA ranks 23rd in pace this season, while Dallas boasts the slowest offense in the league.

Pick: Under 211.5 (-110)
