How Often Does the #1 Pick Win NBA Rookie of the Year?

As the #1 overall pick, Flagg is in fairly good company when it comes to past NBA ROY winners. In the __ year history of the award, 24 first-overall picks have won NBA ROY, which is eight more than second-overall picks, which have won the second-most (16).

First-overall picks have won two of the last three – Paolo Banchero in 2023 and Victor Wembenyama in 2024 – and four in the last decade.

Before you go betting on a second-round longshot, or even anyone outside of the top-ten picks, take a crash-course in NBA ROY history. Only one second-round pick has won Rookie of the Year since Woody Sauldsberry in 1957 (Malcolm Brogdon in 2017).

Since 18th-overall Mark Jackson won in 1988, only two players outside the top-ten picks have won the award: Brogdon and 11th-overall pick Michael Carter-Williams in 2014.
