The Orlando Magic made waves on Sunday afternoon by trading for the Memphis Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane in exchange for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks, and a pick swap.

The addition of the prolific Bane is an immediate boon to an Orlando team that’s borderline dominant defensively but struggles to score. Orlando’s NBA Championship odds immediately improved after the deal.

Magic’s NBA Championship Odds Improve

The Magic were priced at +4000 in the 2026 NBA title odds less than two weeks ago, which amounts to just a 2.44% implied win probability. Now they’re sitting at +2500, which carries a 3.85% implied win probability. While that still looks low, it’s a 57% improvement, which is massive.

Orlando finished last season 41-41 with a -0.1 PPG differential. It was no secret where their deficiencies lay; the Magic were second in the entire league in D-Rating (109.1), trailing only the NBA-best Thunder. But their O-Rating was a dismal 27th (108.9), which was a big step back from the year prior, when they finished 22nd with a 112.9 O-Rating.

Injuries were a big issue, but so was the lack of a high-end scoring option outside of Paolo Banchero (25.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 4.8 APG) and Franz Wagner (24.2 PPG, 5.7 RPG, 4.7 APG). Bane (19.2 PPG) saw his numbers dip last season with Ja Morant playing a relatively high 50 games, but he’s become a proven scorer. He averaged 21.5 PPG in 2022-23 and 23.7 PPG in 2023-24.

Grizzlies See NBA Futures Fade

Memphis made this move in an effort to spark a rebuild. The haul of four first-round picks is absolutely massive. But the immediate future is bleak according to oddsmakers. Memphis was a +5000 bet to win the 2026 NBA title back in early June (1.96% implied win probability). As of June 15th, that number has dropped to +10000 (0.99%), meaning their title chances have basically been slashed in half.

The Grizzlies finished last season a solid 48-34 in the ultra-competitive West, with a +4.8 point differential. With Morant, Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr all playing 50-plus games, Memphis had the sixth-best O-Rating in the NBA (117.2), 11th-best D-Rating (112.6), and sixth-best Net Rating (+4.7).
