Portland Can’t Stop Zion

Memphis couldn’t stop Zion Williamson on Tuesday, and Portland is set for a similar problem on Wednesday. The Blazers are 28th in defensive rating on the season, and they struggled to cope with Williamson last season. The former first overall pick went 20-for-34 for a combined 56 points.

Portland has made tweaks to their defense since then. Derrick Jones Jr. and Robert Covington are two athletic options for Terry Stotts to throw at Williamson, but their presence has not been enough to transform the Blazers into a good defensive team. With Enes Kanter and Carmelo Anthony playing major minutes, they are still vulnerable on that end of the floor.

Opponents are taking almost 35% of their shots at the rim against the Blazers. That ranks 20th in the NBA. A 63.9% opponent field goal percentage on such shots also ranks 20th in the league – Williamson is among the most efficient in the NBA, owning a 65.5% true shooting percentage. He’s also in the 91st percentile by percentage of shots taken at the rim with 323 of his 467 field goal attempts coming from within four feet of the basket.

Williamson is a nightmare matchup for most defenses. This is exaggerated against the Blazers. Having gone over 25.5 points in his last four games, only foul trouble or limited minutes can stop Williamson hitting the over here.

  • Pick: Zion Williamson over 25.5 points (-106)

Bam Takes the Glass

The Warriors have been out-rebounded in each of their last three games. Playing small in the absence of James Wiseman and Kevon Looney has seen some good team performances, but Golden State is obviously vulnerable on the glass. Bam Adebayo has gone over 10.5 boards in six of his last 10 games.

The Warriors have a defensive rebound rate of 76% – good for only 26th in the NBA. Adebayo is 23rd in the league in total rebounding rate, and with no Meyers Leonard or Chris Silva, he’s the Heat’s main force on the glass.

Jimmy Butler will collect a few boards along the way, and Precious Achiuwa is at 9.8 per 36 minutes, but the rebounding responsibility falls to Adebayo. Despite ranking dead-last in offensive rebounds on the season, the Heat should look to attack the glass against Golden State.

Cleveland, Dallas, Orlando and Brooklyn all got some easy second chance opportunities. Jarrett Allen got five offensive rebounds. With no active Warrior averaging more than 5.8 rebounds per game, Adebayo will have opportunities on the glass at both ends. He could get halfway to his total with tip ins.

Averaging 9.4 boards per game in 2020-21, the 10.5 line might seem a bit high. Given the Warriors’ struggles on the glass, though, the over is a worthwhile bet here. Adebayo has enjoyed some dominant games on the glass of late, and he should in for another one on Wednesday night.

  • Pick: Bam Adebayo over 10.5 rebounds (+106)
