After months of speculation, Giannis Antetokounmpo finally made public what the rest of the NBA world already knew. He’s ready to move on from Milwaukee. The 10-time All-Star informed the team he’d like to be traded either before the deadline or in the offseason, so the question now becomes who is his likely suitor.

There are a handful of teams already showing serious interest, but not all of them can be taken seriously.

The NBA’s new cap rules make trading stars extremely difficult, but if the returning salaries line up a deal can certainly get done. Keep reading for Giannis’ next team odds, plus who’s favored to land Antetokounmpo.

There is a stipulation with this market. The official category is which team will Giannis play his next regular season minute for this season after the deadline, which is why Milwaukee is a -110 favorite. Online sportsbooks believe a deal is unlikely, as Giannis is currently sidelined for several weeks, and the Bucks have publicly stated they’re willing to be patient.

After Milwaukee, the Heat (+300) and Knicks (+330) have the next two shortest odds to acquire Giannis, followed by the Warriors (+750) and the Raptors (+1000).

I believe we can rule out all Western Conference teams for two reasons. The legit NBA Championship odds contenders like the Thunder, Spurs and Rockets are either unwilling to trade their key assets to acquire the 31-year-old, or are not in the financial situation to make it work.

San Antonio is the most obvious team that could facilitate a trade, and a Giannis-Wemby duo would be a nightmare for any team in their way. Just imagine trying to create offense against two former NBA DPOY odds winners in the same frontcourt.

However, they don’t want to mortgage their future by trading away budding stars like Dylan Harper or Stephon Castle, and would rather try build a long term contender with Wemby, those two, and De’Aaron Fox.

Fade the Knicks and Heat, Invest in the Pistons

Which brings us to the East. Giannis made noise last offseason about wanting to play with the Knicks, but a deal seems unlikely. New York is over the first cap apron, meaning they need to give away as much salary as they take back. They’d have to send either Karl-Anthony Towns or a combination of OG Annunoby, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges to the Bucks and that’s not moving the needle.

Furthermore, the Knicks are light on draft options and Milwaukee, one of the oldest teams in the NBA, is intent on getting top end young talent of lottery picks in return for Antetokounmpo.

Miami meanwhile, can offer some young talent (Kel’el Ware and Jamie Jacquez Jr.), as well as a high salaried player like Tyler Herro to make the money work. But, they are unable to trade a first round pick until 2030, which basically eliminates them from the conversation.

Then there’s the Pistons, who I believe offer the most value to steal Giannis at +2200 odds. Detroit has up to four first round picks they can trade, plus promising young players like Ausar Thompson, Ron Holland and Jaden Ivey. They also have the large, expiring Tobias Harris contract to throw in to make the financials work.

The Pistons are currently first in the East, and have a top-3 NBA MVP odds contender leading the way in Cade Cunningham. Pairing Cade with an all-time great like Giannis would drastically boost Detroit’s ceiling, and give them the ammo to challenge the Thunder or whoever else comes out of the West.

The Pistons championship window is now, and they owe it to their fans to be aggressive. Adding Giannis is the missing ingredient, and one that would make them relevant in the title conversation for the first time in 18 years.
