Masai Ujiri must know something the rest of the NBA doesn’t. Despite the fact that his Raptors are teetering on the edge of the play-in tournament bubble, Ujiri didn’t unload any of his pending free agents at the deadline despite interest from multiple teams.
Players like Fred Van Vleet and Gary Trent Jr. will now have a chance to decline their player options and hit the open market in the summer. In the meantime however, there’s still plenty of basketball to be played in the 2022-23 campaign.
Toronto’s schedule continues on Tuesday, as they host the Magic. Oddsmakers are expecting the Raps to defend home court, after opening them as sizeable favorites in the NBA odds.

Toronto is currently laying 6 points, in a contest without a total as of Monday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm ET at Scotiabank Arena, and it will mark the fourth and final meeting between these two teams.

Magic vs Raptors Betting Trends
The two squads previously met three times in December, with Orlando taking two of the contests. They cruised to a 111-99 victory in their last game versus the Raptors, beating them for the second time in three nights.
Toronto’s prized small forward O.G. Anunoby didn’t suit up for that outing, and will sit out again on Tuesday. Anunoby is dealing with a wrist injury, and he’s not the only Raptor that may be on the sidelines. Both Trent Jr. (calf) and Precious Achiuwa (ankle) are questionable.
News, of a sort
Gary Trent Jr. (left calf) and Precious Achiuwa (right ankle) did not practice today and are questionable for big Raptors-Orlando tilt; O.G. Anunoby still out, N. Nurse still away from team dealing with a personal matter— Doug Smith: Raptors (@SmithRaps) February 13, 2023
Trent Jr. missed the Raps 119-18 victory over the Pistons on Sunday, but Achiuwa did log 33 minutes. To make matters worse, head coach Nick Nurse is away from the team.
That puts Toronto down potentially three starters, and being light in the front court is not a recipe for success versus Orlando. The Magic (23-34, 9-19 away) are long and athletic up front, led by NBA ROY odds leader Pablo Banchero.
The Duke product leads the team in scoring, while ranking second in rebounding. Along with front court running mates Franz Wagner and Wendell Carter Jr., the trio are the only three Orlando players who average north of 13 points.
The Magic have won three of their past five games coming in, and are just a game removed from upsetting the West’s number one seeded Nuggets.

The Raptors (27-31, 17-13 home) meanwhile, have won four of five. If not for blowing a double-digit lead in the final five minutes of Friday’s loss to Utah, they’d be riding a five-game winning streak.
VanVleet is fresh off a 35-point performance versus the Pistons, and when he eclipses 30 points good things tend to happen. Toronto is 20-7 all-time when he reaches that number, including 5-4 this season. Pascal Siakam is coming in hot as well, averaging over 33 points per night in his last three outings.
Defense has been a staple of Nurse teams over the years, but this season’s version of the roster has been underwhelming in their own end. The Raps rank 19th in defensive rating this season. They’re allowing enemy offenses to shoot 49% from the field, the fourth worst mark in the NBA.
If not for takeaways, Toronto would be in major trouble defensively. Only OKC forces more turnovers per contest than the Raps.
Magic vs Raptors Predictions
Toronto has done decent job at limiting the Magic’s production in their three meetings, holding them to an average of 111 points. The problem is, they haven’t been able to generate enough offense in two of those three contests. With Anunoby out, and potentially Trend Jr. as well, we could see another low output from the Raps offense.
That fits with exactly how Orlando wants to play. The Magic don’t want to get into a shootout, they prefer long, drawn out possessions, with an emphasis on the mid-range and post game.
NBA Top-5 ATS Records
Team | ATS Record |
---|---|
OKC Thunder | 34-20-1 |
Milwaukee Bucks | 31-22-3 |
Philadelphia 76ers | 31-23-1 |
Cleveland Cavaliers | 32-24-3 |
Orlando Magic | 32-24-1 |
Orlando has rode that formula to one of the best ATS marks in the league. They’re covering at a 57% clip, which is significantly better than Toronto. The Magic are 15-11-1 as road dogs, covering in four of their last five instances as visitors.
The Raptors on the other hand, have just a 48% cover rate. They’re 2-5 ATS in their last seven games, and 14-19 against the spread overall as favorites.
Orlando has already covered twice in this matchup this season, and 6 points is simply too many for Toronto to be laying given their injury concerns.
Pick: Orlando Magic +6 (-110)
