Odds as of May 29

MPJ Gets Going

Having started the series poorly, we saw some of the best of Michael Porter Jr in Game 3. The Nuggets forward hit three of his five three-point attempts, contributing 15 points. It wasn’t quite the level that Porter has been playing at since Jamal Murray’s injury, but it was a step in the right direction, and it feels like a breakout game is on its way.

Portland’s defense cratered in Game 3. Terry Stotts’ team had been around league average defensively over the final 15 games of the regular season, having spent most of the season among the worst teams in the league. The Game 3 loss was a worrying sight for Blazers fans, as a mix of a lack of size and defensive effort made life easy for the Nuggets.

Porter is a matchup problem for most teams, but particularly so for Portland. Stotts has tweaked his coverages through the series. Norm Powell often ends up on Porter, and he’s done a good job for the most part. As the Blazers’ defense focuses in on Nikola Jokic, though, who has 108 points in the series, opportunities are only going to increase for Porter.

Porter has just 58 points through three games. That shouldn’t put you off his points total here, however. In nine of his last 10 regular season games playing 30+ minutes, Porter scored 22 or more points. This feels like a great value bet given how the Blazers defended in Game 3.

Pick: Michael Porter Jr over 21.5 points (-110)

Simmons Does It All

Ben Simmons gets a lot of criticism for his playoff performances, but he’s been awesome in this series so far. This is a good matchup for the 2016 first overall pick. Washington has not been able to stop him when he gets going downhill, and given Scott Brooks’ love of three-guard lineups, there are frequently mismatches for Simmons to attack. He’s increasingly willing to take advantage of being guarded by a smaller player, whether to score or make plays from the inside.

Simmons is a difficult player to bet on. He’s inconsistent as a scorer, with his willingness to attack the rim fluctuating from game to game. What’s remarkable, though, is how Simmons can put up big stats without shooting the ball. He had 36 points, rebounds and assists combined in Game 1 despite making just three field goals. In Game 2, that tally was up to 39, but through a different process. Simmons scored 22 points in the blowout.

With regular season averages of 14, 7 and 7, the points, rebounds and assists line of 31.5 may seem a little high. The numbers from the previous two games tell a different story.

This is a series being played at high pace. Washington was the fastest team in the league during the regular season, and the Sixers have been happy to up the tempo. Simmons thrives in transition, and those extra possessions make this an easy over bet.

Pick: Ben Simmons over 31.5 points, rebounds and assists (-113)
