The Utah Jazz have gone 5-12 in 2022. Brooklyn is on a six-game losing streak without Kevin Durant and has fallen down to sixth in the Eastern Conference. A win for either team in their matchup on Friday would be potentially season-changing.

Utah is favored by 5.5 points coming off a home win over Denver on Wednesday night. The Jazz owns just an 8-18 ATS record at home this season, however, while Brooklyn is 5-4 against the spread as a road underdog.

Brooklyn Nets +5.5 (-112) +184 U 227.5 (-110)

The points line is set at 227.5 on Friday night – Brooklyn has cashed the over in seven of 12 games as a dog this season. Utah has been a decent team to bet the over with at home, cashing in 14 of 26.

Jazz vs Nets Injury Updates

Donovan Mitchell returns from a concussion for this game, having not played since January 17th. Utah is 2-6 over that span. They are 26-14 when Mitchell is in the lineup.

Quin Snyder is still without Rudy Gobert (calf), while Hassan Whiteside and Jordan Clarkson are listed as questionable. Joe Ingles is out for the season with a torn ACL, and Danuel House is in health and safety protocols.

Kevin Durant (knee) is out until the All-Star break at least. News broke on Thursday that Joe Harris could require a second surgery on his ankle, and LaMarcus Aldridge is set to miss a few games with his own ankle issue. Paul Millsap remains away from the team as Brooklyn looks for a trade before next week’s deadline.

Both Teams Struggling on Defense

These respective slumps can primarily be blamed on the defense. Utah’s defense is horrible without Gobert – the 115 defensive rating without the Defensive Player of the Year would be the fourth-worst defense in the league across the season. Brooklyn is worse on defense without Durant too, but there’s been a general trend of defensive decline throughout the season, partly because they were riding some poor opponent shooting in the opening months.

The Nets are 27th in defensive rating over the last 10 games, worse than the Rockets. They are in the bottom 10 in opponent three-point attempts, and rank 22nd in percentage of opponent shots at the rim. Crucially, they aren’t forcing many turnovers either – only four teams have fewer opponent giveaways per game.

Offense is bound to outplay defense on Friday night. Aside from the league’s rebuilders, these are two of the worst defenses teams in the Association right now. They might both rank in the bottom half in pace over the last 15 games, but it’s easy to see why the points line is so high.

Pick for Nets vs Jazz

While a high-scoring game is likely, we can’t take the over with any confidence. The combined points total has been 228 or more in just two of Utah’s last nine games. It’s only hit twice in Brooklyn’s last five. If it comes down to 224.5 or 225, it’s a more reasonable bet.

Utah to cover is the best bet on the board right now. Their offense has ranked 17th over the last five games even without Mitchell, and against a porous Nets defense, they should be able to score at will. The Jazz offense scores 7.7 more points per 100 possessions with Mitchell on the floor.

Mitchell’s return should help the Jazz break out of this slump. He enlivens their offense, providing scoring punch they have missed at times recently. When engaged on defense, he can take on the James Harden or Kyrie Irving assignment and has the athleticism to stay in front of the Nets’ two All-Stars.

When Utah wins, they tend to do so with a decent margin. Seven of their last eight victories have come by six or more points – take the hosts to cover.
