The Detroit Pistons (17-18, 8-8 home, 18-16-1 ATS) and Portland Trail Blazers (12-22, 4-14 away, 17-16-1 ATS) both finished at the bottom of their respective conferences last season. But as they get set to square off in the Motor City on Monday, January 6 (7:10 pm ET), one franchise has turned a corner and is battling for a playoff spot, while the other is still fighting to stay out of the NBA cellar. The Pistons head into the game as 6.5-point favorites in Monday’s NBA odds.

The Blazers are coming off arguably their best game of the season, winning 105-102 over the Bucks in Milwaukee as 12-point road underdogs. But the Blazers are right in the middle of a long, arduous road trip that started in Los Angeles on Jan. 2, and their lack of depth is going to be a big factor. Head coach Chauncey Billups only went eight deep against the Bucks two nights ago with each of his starters playing at least 32 minutes. Against the Lakers on the first game of the trip, nine players saw action, but that includes a scant five minutes from Danalo Banton (9.2 PPG).
With Jerami Grant (15.0 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.3 APG) out, Billups effectively has just eight players he trusts. Grant will miss his fourth straight game on Monday night due to a facial contusion.

The Pistons suffered a big blow on Jan. 1 when second-leading scorer Jaden Ivey (17.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 4.0 APG) broke his leg in a 105-96 win over Orlando. But they responded with resilience, winning their next two games in impressive fashion over the Hornets (98-94) and Timberwolves (119-105), both at home.
Cade Cunningham (24.1 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 9.5 APG) dropped a season-high 40 in the win over Minnesota, just three off his career high.

During their win streak, Detroit has moved within a game of .500 and up to 19th in the NBA Net Ratings (-1.9). The Blazers are an ugly 28th at -8.7, which is only incrementally better than where they finished last season (28th, -9.0).
I’m not going to lay the full 6.5 but I am going to bet the Pistons to cover the alt-spread of 3.5 while also backing Cunningham to have another big night, points-wise, without Ivey to help shoulder the scoring load.
