Two teams who will likely be fighting for their playoff lives for the remainder of the season square off on Thursday in Minnesota. The Timberwolves (31-29, 20-12 home) host the Wizards (27-30, 13-18) on the final day before the All-Star Break.

Minnesota enters play in eighth in the West, and playing some of its best ball of the season. Washington on the other hand, is clinging to the final play-in tournament berth. The Wizards offense has been lights out over the past few weeks, but unfortunately their defense has let them down.

Online sportsbooks are expecting a competitive tilt between these two teams, but are more bullish on Minnesota in the NBA odds.

Wizards vs Timberwolves Betting Analysis

The Wizards took the first meeting 142-127, in what was Washington’s highest scoring game of the season. The team shot a blistering 57% from the field and 48% from three, led by the 41 points of Kristaps Porzingis. Kyle Kuzma added 23 points, while Bradley Beal splashed 22, and all three will be in the lineup on Thursday.

Washington’s offense has been cooking lately. Both Porzingis and Beal have at least three 30+ point games this month, while Kuzma is fresh off a 33 point effort. The Wizards have scored at least 126 points in three straight games, and enter play winners of three of their past four overall.

They’ve won eight times in their last 13 games and boast a top-seven offensive rating during that stretch. Unfortunately they’re playing like a bottom-11 defense over those outings, which has prevented them from an even better record.

Washington has found success on the road lately, going 6-2 in its last eight contests away from home. That includes a 126-101 victory in Portland on Valentine’s Day, in their latest outing as visitors.

The Timberwolves meanwhile, have finally found their stride without Karl-Anthony Towns. The former number one overall pick hasn’t played since last November due to a calf injury, and likely won’t suit up again until the final month of the season.

After a slow start without KAT, the T-Wolves are 15-8 in 2023. They’ve won seven times in their past 11 contests, beating a handful of the best teams in the West. Minnesota has posted victories over Dallas, Memphis, Denver, Golden State and New Orleans during that stretch, who are all top-11 NBA Championship odds contenders.

While Washington has been finding success with its offense, the Timberwolves are better known for their defense. They rank top-10 in defensive rating this season, but could be facing an uphill battle on Thursday.

That’s because Rudy Gobert is questionable with a groin injury. Gobert was a late add to the injury report on Wednesday which is never a good sign. He leads the team in rebounding and blocks, and is widely considered one of the best rim protectors in the league.

Offensively, expect another big game from Anthony Edwards. The Georgia product poured in 32 points in Minnesota’s latest victory over the Mavericks, and has seven 30+ point performances over the last three weeks.

Wizards vs Timberwolves Predictions

It’s unfortunate a total isn’t posted at the time of writing because this contest is a prime over candidate. In the absence of a total however, the trends are pointing to Washington.

The Wizards are 3-1 ATS over their past four games, with an average cover margin of 12 points during that stretch. They’ve covered in nine of 13 overall, and easily beat the spread in their previous meeting with Minnesota.

Wizards Last 4 Games ATS

Opponent Spread Result Diff
Portland Trail Blazers -1.5 W by 25 +23.5
Golden State Warriors +3.5 L by 9 -5.5
Indiana Pacers -6 W by 14 +8
Charlotte Hornets -3.5 W by 14 +10.5

The potential absence of Gobert would make things much easier on the Wizards stars, in particular Porzingis. The Timberwolves have excelled as underdogs this season against the spread, but it’s been a different story as favorites.

Minnesota is 7-11 ATS when laying points at home, and have covered only five times in 12 games versus Eastern Conference teams.

Pick: Washington Wizards +4 (-110)
