Virginia was not an at-large team in last week’s projected March Madness bracket, sitting 52nd in the NET Rankings and 68th at KenPom. UVA likely needs multiple wins in the ACC Tournament to get on the right side of the bubble.

BC is out of contention for an at-large and needs to string together three more victories to get the ACC’s auto-bid.

Boston College Routs Miami, Clemson to Reach ACC Quarterfinals

After ending the regular season on a two-game win streak, BC parlayed that momentum into back-to-back upsets over Miami (81-65 as 3.5-point underdogs) and Clemson (76-55 as 7.5-point underdogs) in the first two rounds of the ACC Tournament.

Leading scorer Quinten Post had a game-high 30 in the win over the Hurricanes, while second-leading scorer Claudell Harris Jr led the Eagles with 27 in the win over Clemson, arguably BC’s best win of the entire season.

The Eagles now rate 64th in offensive efficiency at KenPom but 110th on defense.

In their regular-season meeting with the Wahoos, BC wound up losing by four (72-68). The score was just 27-23 at the break before both teams exploded for 45 points in the second stanza.

Virginia Limps to the Finish Line in ACC Play

In early February, UVA was 10-3 in ACC play and challenging Duke and UNC for the regular-season title.  But the Cavaliers lost four of their final seven games, fading from 48th at KenPom all the way to 68th in the final three weeks of the season.

All four of their recent losses were by double-digits, including an embarrassing 75-41 loss at Virginia Tech, and a 73-48 beatdown at the hands of Duke.

Tony Bennett’s team was able to right the ship (to an extent) in its final regular-season game against Georgia Tech, beating the Yellow Jackets 72-57 at home thanks to a 21-poitn performance from leading scorer Reece Beekman (14.3 PPG, 6.0 APG).

UVA has often been a significantly better defensive than offensive team under Bennett, but that’s been taken to a new extreme this season. The Cavaliers are seventh in the nation in defensive efficiency and averaging just 59.1 PPG against (third only to Houston at 56.9 and Saint Mary’s at 58.7). Their offense, on the other hand, is just 193rd if efficiency and averaging 63.5 PPG.

Boston College vs Virginia Prediction

Virginia’s slow tempo and subpar offense make for high-variability games. It doesn’t take much of a hot/cold streak from either opponent to flip the supposed script on its head.

BC is playing its best basketball of the season and already showed a couple weeks ago that it has the talent and coach to keep pace with UVA. The Eagles actually took a 51-48 lead in the regular-season meeting with under ten minutes to play before an 11-0 run put Virgina back on top for good.

Don’t be the least bit surprised if Boston College’s momentum propels them all the way to the ACC semifinals today.
