The Stanford Cardinal, who have won four of their last six games, host the Oregon Ducks Thursday, Feb. 25. Tip is set for 9pm ET at Maples Pavilion.
Oregon had won five in a row before crashing to earth in a major way against now-conference-leading USC 72-58 Monday. Meantime, Stanford was the victim of a 40-point effort by Noah Williams Saturday in Pullman, as it took the Cougars 55 minutes to finally vanquish the Cardinal 85-76.
Now, Jerod Haase’s team looks to get back on track as slight home favorites against Dana Altman’s crew.

No Love For California
Simply put, the Ducks got destroyed by the Trojans in the first eight minutes of the game Monday and weren’t able to rebound. Franck Kepnang didn’t score UO’s first field goal until just after the under-12:00 TV timeout.
Oregon was 10-for-29 from the field (and 1 of-8 from distance) in the first half. USC outrebounded the Ducks 39-26. As Altman said after the game, UO wasn’t able to get anything going offensively and seemed stuck in the mud. With another lethargic performance on The Farm, the Ducks can expect another loss.
Oregon is embarking on a brutal closing stretch Thursday that includes five games over 11 days. This is a team that has been hit hard by the coronavirus like few others have in the Pac-12 this season. The Ducks had extended pauses in late December and the middle of January and had two of the their primary scoring threats — Chris Duarte and TJ Figueroa — each miss two games due to COVID. Plus, starting point guard Will Richardson missed much of the season with an injured thumb.
Despite all that, Oregon’s the 42nd-ranked team overall by KenPom The Ducks knocked off the Cardinal 73-56 in Eugene on Jan. 2. But if Altman’s crew doesn’t come out focused, it could be another ugly outing in the Golden State.
Home Again
Haase’s team was so close to completing a four-game sweep of the Washington schools. But Williams was just too much in the eventual nine-point, triple-overtime defeat. It didn’t help that Stanford’s leading scorer, Oscar Da Silva, finished with just 11 points before fouling out in the second extra period..
Stanford still outshot WSU, going 52-percent from the field compared to to 36-percent for the Cougs. But the home team had 12 more rebounds, six more 3’s and nine more free throws.
But the program very much on the NCAA Tournament bubble got some good news Monday. Its five games in Santa Cruz, initially played as “home games” due to Santa Clara County’s COVID restrictions, were reclassified as neutral site affairs by the NCAA. The Cardinal won all five. And neutral site victories carry more weight than home victories.
Thursday’s game against the Ducks will be the team’s first since the decision and fifth true home game back at Maples. The Cardinal are 2-2 in the previous four. But with their confidence buoyed by the NCAA and motivated to put a bitter loss behind them, you would think the Cardinal will play well.
The Series
The Oregon-Stanford series has been a back-and-forth affair over the last 14 years, with neither program winning more than two games in a row against each other since Stanford’s seven-game win streak in the series was snapped Jan. 18, 2007.
If that form holds — since the Cardinal have lost the last two against the Ducks — you should be able to chalk up a victory for the home team Thursday. But is it really that simple?
With neither team especially elite in various efficiency ratings, this one could come down to the 3-point shot. Duarte is one of the best in the Pac-12, busting 3’s at a 42-percent clip on the season. But check out what Stanford’s Spencer Jones has done lately.
