UCLA, Arizona and USC are considered locks to make the NCAA Tournament field of 68. Anyone else will have to win the tournament to get in. Arizona is the defending champion and has won three of the last five and four of the last seven tourneys. UCLA has not won since 2014. Fifth-seeded Oregon State  was the 2021 champion, winning four games in four days to earn the automatic NCAA Tournament bid it otherwise would not have received.

Pac-12 Tournament Schedule

There are four play-in games Wednesday to thin the field into an eight-team bracket.  No. 8 seed Washington  plays No. 9 seed Colorado at 3 pm ET and No. 5 seed Washington State plays No. 12 seed California at 5:30 pm ET. No. 7 seed Utah plays No. 10 seed Stanford at 9 pm ET and No. 6 seed Arizona State plays No. 11 seed Oregon State at 11:30 pm ET.  All games will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

In the quarterfinals Thursday, No. 1 seed UCLA will play the winner of the Washington-Colorado game at 3 pm ET and No. 4 seed Oregon will play the Washington State-California winner at 5:30 pm ET.  No. 2 seed Arizona will play the Utah-Stanford winner at 9 pm ET and No. 3 seed USC will play the Arizona State-Oregon State winner at 11:30 pm ET.  The USC game will be televised by ESPN, the others on the Pac-12 Network.

The Friday semifinals will be played at 9 pm ET and 11:30 pm, and the finals will be played at 10:30 pm Saturday on ESPN. No. 1 seed Arizona beat No.2 seed UCLA 84-76 in the finals last season.

UCLA on a Roll

With Jaime Jacquez and Tyger Campbell leading the way, the Bruins have won 10 in a row and 24 of their last 26, the only hiccup coming in a six-day stretch in which they lost road games at Arizona  58-52 on Jan. 21 and at USC 77-64 on Jan. 26. UCLA’s other two losses are to Illinois (79-70 and Baylor (80-75) in the Continental Tire Main Event Nov. 18-20 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, site of the Pac-12 Tournament.

UCLA is a league-best 18-12-1 ATS this season, 5-3-2, during its current 10-game winning streak.

Pac-12 Player of the Year Race

Arizona forward 6’11” Azuolas Tubelis and UCLA forward 6’6″ Jaime Jaquez are the only candidates for the Pac-12 Player of the Year award. Tubelis will be the xxth player to lead the league in scoring (19.9) and rebounding (9.2) in the same season if he holds his edge through the tournament. He is shooting 57.7 percent from the field and is averaging 2.0 assists per game.

Jaquez is averaging 17.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game and has the distinction of leading his team to the regular season championship. USC guard Boogie Ellis has closed well, averaging 25.8 points and 3.3 assists in the last six games, but this is a two-horse race.

Pac-12 Tournament Prediction

The only reason to stay away from Top 10 teams such as UCLA and Arizona in a league tournament is the fact that they already are securely in the NCAA Tournament and may not feel an urgency to push all the way through,  perhaps opting to rest players or keep those at less than 100 percent on a short leash. That being said, UCLA has a genuine toughness led by a group of committed seniors and winning the Pac-12 Tournament would guarantee the Bruins a No. 1 seed in the NCAAs. Not that that is a be-all, end-all, but it does give UCLA another reason to go all out.

Pick: UCLA +110
