Richmond Stars in First Meeting

Seton Hall guard 6’6 Kadary Richmond was unstoppable in critical stretches of the Pirates’ 90-87 overtime victory in the first meeting, at times physically overpowering UConn defender Tyrese Martin on moves to the basket.

Richmond, who did not start, scored 25 of his career-high 27 points in the second half, and he had 17 consecutive Pirates’ points during a five-minute stretch to help the Pirates overcame a 54-45 deficit. He was 10 of 13 from he field.

Seton Hall ignored Richmond most of the overtime before running a play for him that led to a go-ahead layup for an 88-87 lead with 30 seconds left in overtime.

Adama Sanogo had 18 points and 16 rebounds for UConn, which had a 40-25 rebounding edge but had 19 turnovers.

Don’t Sleep on UConn

The Huskies, , one of two teams to beat No. 2 Auburn this season, are tied with Providence at +1800 to make the Final Four. Villanova (+500), Marquette +1500) and Xavier (+1600) are getting better odds.

The Huskies have home games against Xavier and Villanova after playing Seton Hall and finish the regular season with three second-division teams.

Guard R. J Cole (16.2 points, 4.5 assists), Sanogo (14.9 points, 8.2 rebounds), and Martin (13.9 points, 6.7 rebounds are double-digit scorers for a team that has a plus-11.8 scoring margin, a plus-7.4 rebound margin and is limiting opponents to 39.4 shooting from the floor. All are in the top 25 in Division I.

The Hall Perseveres

Pirates’ guard Bryce Aiken had 22 points and seven assists in the the first meeting with UConn, but he has missed the last seven games with concussion symptoms and is questionable tonight.

Harvard transfer Aiken had become the Pirates’ de facto closer even in games he did not start, taking charge of the offense down the stretch.  The Hall is 4-3 in his absence, when Richmond entered the lineup for good and took over much of the ball-handling responsibilities.

Wing Jared Rhoden (16.4 points, 6.8 rebounds) and Aiken (14.5) are the only Pirates scoring in double figures, but four including Richmond (8.9) are averaging at least 10.

Richmond had 16 points and five assists the last time out, a 73-67 loss at Villanova on Saturday. The Pirates game was tied  with 1:54 left before the Wildcats scored the final six.

Seton Hall vs UConn Prediction

UConn has the revenge factor on its side, and its only loss bad loss in its last 10 games was a 59-55 home loss to Creighton that caught the Huskies looking ahead to a three-game stretch against Villanova, Marquette and Xavier. Losses to DePaul and St. John’s have dropped the Pirates into the middle of the Big East pack as they enter the most difficult of their six remaining games. Revenge plays here.

The pick: UConn -5.5 (-110)
