Tennessee State Recent Results

Brian Collins’ Tigers team saw Kassim Nicholson go 7-of-9 from the field and finish with game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (eight) in a four-point win over Austin Peay last timeout. Fellow seniors Kenny Cooper and Shakem Johnson chipped in 12  and 11, respectively.

Meantime, Preston Spradlin’s club put together a 17-0 run in just a 3:21 period of the second half as the Eagles shook off an eight-point deficit to rally for a three-point victory over the Cougars as the team’s leading scorer, Johni Broome, registered his 12th double-double of the season and 25th of his career with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Tennessee State held a three-point advantage over Austin Peay and scored nine unanswered points to extend the advantage to 58-46. Then, the Tigers overcame a nasty finish — only converting one more field goal in the final 5:25 — to finish off the Governors for their second win in in the last three outings.

Tennessee State vs Morehead State H2H

Now, Nicholson and company seek revenge for a 71-64 defeat to the Eagles in Nashville earlier this month. The 6-foot-7 forward is one of four players on TSU averaging in double-digits (putting up 11.2 ppg) and leads the squad in rebounding (at 8.1 boards per game). Carlos Marshall leads the way with 12.6 points an outing after missing all of last season.

The Tigers are the eighth-rated team in the OVC overall by KenPom and feature the 29th-most experienced roster in college hoops. Coach Collins’ group is especially adroit from distance, owning the 23rd-best offensive 3-point field percentage. With its upperclassmen-laden roster and ability to shoot from the beyond the arc, the Tigers are no pushover.

Eagles Nest

MSU trailed SIUE 56-50 with 8:39 remaining, but the Eagles bounced back to run its home court winning streak to 17 games — which is tied for fourth-best in the nation, tied with Kansas. In addition, Spradlin’s guys have ripped off eight straight victories overall. Over that stretch, the Eagles have shot 45% or better against all eight opponents.

The Eagles returned six of their top nine players from last year’s NCAA Tournament team, including reigning OVC Freshman of the Year Broome. He was one of only three freshmen nationally last season to lead their team in each scoring (13.8 ppg), rebounding (9.0 rpg) and blocks (1.9 bpg).  The 6-foot-10 Plant City native leads the Eagles again in all three categories — and is even better so far in 2021-22. He’s going for 16.2 points, 10.4 boards and 3.4 blocks per game now.

Morehead State is rated as the third-best team (after Murray State and Belmont) and hasn’t lost since dropping back-to-back games in mid-December. Like their opponent Monday, the Eagles have a deft touch from distance, owning the 13th-best offensive 3-point field goal percentage.

Tennessee State vs Morehead State Pick

The Tigers will be confident entering Johnson Arena with vengeance on their mind. But, how much will that matter?

Behind Broome — one of the most dangerous players in the country at the mid-major level — the Eagles are primed to win their fourth straight in the series. But the spread is fairly large. MSU has won by more than 13 points only once (a 76-62 win over Tennessee Martin on Jan. 12) in the last six games. The Eagles will win — but not cover.

Pick: Tennessee State +13.5 (-110)
