  • See below for odds, analysis and a betting prediction

Much is expected of the Maryland Terrapins this season. So far into the young NCAA men’s basketball campaign, the Terps are doing nothing to dissuade those expectations.

Opening with three straight home games in a five-day span, Maryland is also 2-0. The Terrapins have posted victories over Quinnipiac and George Washington.

They’ll look to make it three in a row against the unbeaten Vermount Catamounts (1-0). Online Maryland sports betting oddsmakers are confident that Maryland will make it happen. The Terrapins are being established as 11.5-point favorites.

Maryland Terrapins Betting Trends

The Terrapins were firing on all cylinders in their season-opening win against the Bobcats. During an 89-63 triumph, Maryland shot 49.2% (36-of-63) from the field and 35.3% (6-of-17) from 3-point range. The Terps outrebounded Quinnipiac 45-29, including a 13-5 edge on the offensive boards.

Center Qudus Wahab, a 6-foot-11 transfer from Georgetown, paced the offense with 17 points. He also pulled down six boards. Senior guard Eric Ayala, Maryland’s leading scorer last season, added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. The Terps won their home opener for the 45th year in a row, a streak that dates back to the 1977-78 season.

We cannot tell a lie, though. Against George Washington, Maryland was not nearly as sharp during a 71-64 victory over the Colonials. The Terps shot just 37.5% (24-of-64) from the field and a dismal 3-for-20 (15%) from beyond the arc.

Wahab again led the way with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Daron Russell scored 15 points.

Vermont Catamounts Betting Trends

The Catamounts opened the season with a solid 71-57 decision over Northern Iowa. Ben Shungu paced the Vermont attack with 19 points. Isaiah Powell added 17 points. Vermont was 2.5-point road underdogs.

The Catamounts shot 45% (27-of-60) from the field and 33.3% (11-of-33) from long range. Vermont was a perfect six-for-six from the free-throw line. The Cats dished out 16 assists while scoring 18 points off 17 Northern Iowa turnovers. They grabbed 34 boards. Robin Duncan matched a career-high with 11 rebounds.

With four returning starters, Vermont is favored to win the American East Conference title. They were 10-5 last season. The Catamounts were AEC regular-season champions. However, Vermont lost to Hartford in the AEC Tournament semifinals, missing out on the conference’s lone automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

Key player for Vemont is forward Ryan Davis. The 6-foot-10 senior led the squad in scoring with 18.5 points and was named America East Conference player of the year. However, he sat out the season opener with what was termed a non-COVID illness. His status for Saturday’s game is uncertain.

Vermont vs Maryland Prediction

The Terrapins are not proving to be a very good against the spread bet. They are 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games and 1-4 ATS over the past five games. Vermont is 4-1 straight up in its last five road games.

The under is 5-2 in Vermont’s last seven road games. Meanwhile, four of Maryland’s last 15 games have also gone under. The Terrapins have won both previous meetings with the Catamounts. Vermont is 2-18 all-time against Big Ten schools.

In their own realm, Vermont is a steady performer. The Catamounts have finished no worse than third in the America East Conference in each of the past 13 years, including four conference titles. They’ve made three trips to the NCAA Tournament in 11 years under coach John Becker.

Stepping up in class, the Cats can’t match the Terps in athleticism or depth of scoring. That depth will be tested as Maryland plays its third game in six days. But the Terrapins have more than enough to handle the Catamounts. If Maryland irons out the club’s 3-point shooting woes, this one figures to be a rout.

Pick: Maryland Terrapins -11.5 (-105).
