Making money on college football means finding the value in off the radar games.

Marshall faces FIU on Friday night and it is exactly the type of game that deserves your attention. The Thundering Herd are 23.5-point favorites as they head to South Florida and face a team coming off a loss to an FCS squad.

There are several reasons to bet on Marshall in this game and one glaring reason to fade FIU. Let’s look at their current situations to see if there is value in the current point spread.

Marshall Winning With Elite Defense

Marshall has the best defense in the country of teams that have played more than one game. They have given up only 9.4 points per game and have been a force on that side of the ball.

The Thundering Herd are 5-0 and have won every game by double-digits thanks in large part to their ability to keep opponents from getting in to the end zone. The competition hasn’t been great, but FIU isn’t great either. Worry about how they stack up against top opponents if and when they play one down the road.

Marshall leans on the defense but that’s not to say they haven’t been good on offense as well. Quarterback Grant Wells has passed for 1,110 yards and eight touchdowns, and running back Brenden Knox has been even better.

Knox ranks 10th in college football with 556 yards and has seven touchdowns on the ground. With Wells playing the role of game manager and Knox helping prolong drives, the offensive unit does a great job helping out their elite defense.

FIU Has No Answers at Quarterback Position

FIU head coach Butch Davis is in a tough spot. He’s getting set to host a great defense and has little to no idea who should take the field at the most important position. The Panthers have lost all three games they’ve played and have used a different starting quarterback in each contest. The changes weren’t because of injury or illness, they were simply because nobody has emerged as a capable option.

The trio of Max Bortenschlager, Stone Norton and Kaylan Wigging has accomplished almost nothing through three games. The best performance they put together was 136 passing yards in a loss to Liberty.

Norton was the most recent quarterback to give it a go and finished 5 for 16 for 66 yards against FCS Jacksonville State. If Norton and his two teammates couldn’t get things going against a team from the Ohio Valley Conference, what do you think they’ll be able to muster up against the top ranked defense in the country?

There’s a reason Marshall is listed as a -10000 favorite in this game. This is a one sided affair that could be over before it starts. The spread is only going to get higher closer to kickoff with this being one of the lone games on Friday night. Bet the Thundering Herd and bet them before any value is taken away. The current number is one to be taken advantage of with confidence.

The Pick: Marshall -23.5 (-105)
