Pushing the Pace

Perhaps the biggest reason to be optimistic about this game shooting out is the pace at which Wake Forest and Boston College play. Both teams rank inside the top-10 in plays per game and neither fields a strong defense which should allow the opposing offense to rack up scores.

BC in particular has been woeful defensively, ranking 102nd nationally in total defense and 97th in yards per play allowed (6.02). The Demon Deacons haven’t fared much better, ranking 55th in defensive efficiency, but both teams have been able to cover up their defensive warts thanks to extremely efficient offenses.

Racking Up Points

When these two teams met last year, they combined to score 75 points in a seven point Eagles win. So far this season, BC averages 33.5 points per game, while the Demon Decons are putting up 38 per contest. Wake Forest ranks 11th in total offense (533.8 yards per game) and quarterback Jamie Newman has been a model of consistency, passing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in three of his first four games.

He’s completed 71.1% of his passes for 1,278 yards and has also chipped in a team-high three rushing scores. The Demon Deacons average over 200 rushing yards per game and have the personnel to expose both facets of the Eagles defense.

Not to be outdone, BC ranks third in the ACC in total offense and boasts the conference’s number one rushing attack, led by AJ Dillon. The junior running back has already punched in six scores this season and was instrumental in the Eagles win over Wake Forest last season, rocking them for 185 rushing yards and a score.

You can expect BC to find similar success on the ground in this year’s matchup, and when they’re not running all over the Demon Deacons, they’ll have no problem attacking Wake Forest’s 76th-ranked pass defense.

It’s Going to be a Long Day for Both Defenses

Neither one of these defenses is equipped to stop the other’s offense which should lead to a high scoring affair. Both teams will push the pace offensively, leading to more snaps and more  opportunity. Sharp bettors saw a buy low spot when the total was 66 and have continued to hammer the over ever since. We should follow suit and feel confident that both programs have a realistic shot at reaching 40 points on Saturday.
