Line Movement

The Bears lost straight up and against the spread in their past two road dates with the Rams. Chicago dropped a 24-10 decision as a 6.5-point underdog in Week 7 last season, and has scored just 17 total points over its past two clashes with Los Angeles.

Chicago’s recent struggles against LA are reflected at the sportsbooks, where they have dipped to 8-point underdogs after opening at +7.5. Los Angeles is attracting the lion’s share of sports bettor interest. 59% of all wagers and 58% of all money is getting laid on the Rams. The total has been on the rise, bucking the trend towards low scoring when these two teams meet, climbing to 46.5 since opening at 43.5.

Bears Aim to Reverse 2020 Road Woes

Winners in five of their first six contests last season, the Bears followed up with a six-game slide to finish with an 8-8 record, good enough for a wild card berth. Overall, The Bears produced mixed results when playing on the road last season, going 5-3. However, that was more reflective of a favorable road schedule, with each of those victories coming against teams with losing records.

Little improvement is expected from Chicago this time around. The Bears have largely held steady since opening with a projected win total of 7.5, and open the new campaign as a distant +225 bet to return to the postseason for a second straight season.

Dalton Starts, for Now

Much will depend on the success of Chicago’s offseason personnel changes under center. Veteran quarterback Andy Dalton opens the season as the starter, taking over the offense after the team elected to part ways with Mitch Trubisky . However, the question remains just how long the Bears will wait before giving rookie passer Justin Fields a shot.

Fields was selected 11th overall in this year’s NFL Draft following a successful collegiate career at Ohio State, and didn’t disappoint while appearing in all three preseason contests. However, injuries have emerged as a concern for the Bears entering Week 1. Linebacker Khalil Mack is listed as questionable as he deals with a groin injury, and is joined in the clinic by WR Darnell Mooney and DL Eddie Goldman.

Rams Coming off Dismal Preseason

The Rams return to action looking to build on last season’s 10-6 record and march to the NFC Divisional Playoffs. However, inconsistency plagued Los Angeles throughout the regular season, which they ended on a middling 3-3 run, including a pair of outright losses as home favorites.

Things got no better for the Rams during the preseason. The squad scored just 34 total points while going 0-3, including home losses to the Las Vegas and the LA Chargers.

Stafford Set for Rams Debut

Knotted with the Bears as the lowest scoring teams to reach the playoffs last season, the Rams took a bold step during the offseason, dealing QB Jared Goff and a bevy of draft picks to the Detroit Lions for Matthew Stafford. The 33-year-old pivot enjoys a wealth of experience against Chicago. While he led the Lions to just four wins in his past seven meetings with the Bears, he racked up 10 TDs while averaging over 281 passing yards per game over that stretch.

A preseason injury to rusher Cam Akers was a devastating blow to the Rams, who were forced to fill the void by acquiring Sony Michel in a deal with New England. However, the Rams are otherwise in good health entering Week 1, and are well positioned to extend their recent dominance over the Bears.

The Picks: Rams +8 (-110); UNDER 46.5 (-110)
