Here’s How This NFL Sim Will Work
If you’ve ever played Madden, this isn’t going to be anything new. However, instead of two players going head to head, the computer will play the game.
Every year, when the new Madden NFL game is released, EA Sports, the company that produces the game, allows a computer to play out the upcoming NFL season in advance, complete with up-to-date rosters.
Last season, the simulation predicted that the Cowboys would go 8-8 and miss the playoffs. In reality, the Cowboys went 8-8 and missed the playoffs.
The computer also had the Kansas City Chiefs winning Super Bowl 54. Which as we know, Pat Mahomes and the Chiefs did in fact do. However, Kansas City’s victory in sim Super Bowl 54 was a 24-10 verdict over the Eagles. In reality, KC defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 to win its first title since 1970.
The computer did throw a couple of other virtual pick-sixes. It had the 9-7 New York Jets winning the AFC East, and the 11-5 Denver Broncos finishing atop the AFC West.
In the real world, the Broncos and Jets both ended up 7-9.
NASCAR Trying Something Similar
Without real NASCAR to watch, the brain trust at the world’s leading stock car racing circuit also opted to go virtual. They held a virtual race last Sunday from simulated Homestead Speedway in Miami. The twist? The real drivers were at the controls of their sim cars.

Actual Denny Hamlin drove virtual Denny Hamlin to victory in the eNASCAR iRacing Pro Invitational on March 22nd. Carried by FS1, it was the most-watched event in eSports history, drawing 903,000 viewers.
Virtual Sports Betting Growing In Popularity
Books are currently offering a wide array of virtual sports betting. You’ll find everything from basketball, to soccer, to motor racing, to horse and greyhound racing. There’s even virtual camel racing.
In 2016, sportsbooks in Europe carried wagering on a virtual Euro 2016. With this year’s event postponed due to the coronavirus, a virtual Euro 2020 could provide tremendous betting lines.
European online sportsbooks say that virtual sports is #3 in wagering handle, behind only soccer and horse racing.
Virtually Speaking, Should Bet Eagles or Cowboys?
One weakness of the sim game is that the rosters of the two teams are not up to date. Corner Byron Jones, who left via free agency for the Miami Dolphins, is still in the Dallas defense. Center Travis Frederick, who retired this week, is also in the virtual Cowboys lineup.

In reality, Dallas has won four of five from the Eagles and covered the four-point spread in each victory.
Pick: Dallas Cowboys -4 (-115)
