Final Bengals vs Chiefs Injury Report, Game Statuses for AFC Championship – Updates on Tyrann Mathieu, Joe Burrow

Published:

- The Chiefs host the Bills in the AFC Championship Game on Sunday
- Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is expected to play after sustaining a concussion last week
- Â Bengals reserve defensive end Cam Sample is listed as doubtful
The injury list is short for both teams as the Cincinnati Bengals get set to visit the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game at 3 p.m. ET Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Bengals injury report has just three players with injury designations and the Chiefs injury report lists just two. Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu (concussion) is the only starting player on either list but is expected to play despite being listed as questionable.
Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow (knee) and Tee Higgins (thumb) were full participants in practice Friday. So were Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (shoulder), wide receivers Mecole Hardman (hip) and WR Tyreek Hill (heel), linebacker Anthony Hitchens (back), defensive lineman Chris Jones (groin), cornerbacks L’Jarius Sneed (knee) and Chavarius Ward (neck) and offensive lineman Andrew Wylie (elbow).
The Chiefs are favored by 7.5 points.
Bengals’ D-Line Depth Could Take Hit
Bengals defensive end Cam Sample (groin) is listed as doubtful and defensive tackle Josh Tupou (knee) is questionable. Though neither is a starter, they enable Cincinnati to rotate their defensive linemen and keep them fresh.
Bengals Injury Report
Player | Position | Injury | Status |
---|---|---|---|
Stanley Morgan | WR | Hamstring | Doubtful |
Cam Sample | DE | Groin | Doubtful |
Josh Tupou | DT | Knee | Questionable |
Sample had 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks in the regular season. He also had one stop last week as the Bengals beat the Tennessee Titans 19-16 in a divisional playoff game last Saturday.

Tupou registered 12 tackles during the regular season but has not appeared in either playoff game.
Morgan was active for just three regular-season games and had two receptions for 34 yards. He has not dressed for either postseason game.
Chiefs’ Mathieu Likely to Play
Mathieu practiced this week and coach Andy Reid said Friday he expects his strong safety to be a go Sunday. Mathieu was injured in the first quarter last Sunday when the Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 42-36 in overtime in the divisional round.
Chiefs Injury Report
Player | Position | Injury | Status |
---|---|---|---|
Tyrann Mathieu | S | Concussion | Questionable |
Darrel Williams | RB | Toe | Questionable |
During the regular season, Mathieu had 60 tackles, three interceptions, one sack, three fumble recoveries and six passes defensed. He has been limited to one tackle in two playoff games, though.

If Mathieu can’t play, Daniel Sorensen will likely take his place in the lineup.
Running back Darrel Williams (toe), the top backup to Clyde Edwards-Helaire, is questionable after missing last week’s game. Williams had 1,010 yards from scrimmage in the regular season – 558 rushing and 452 receiving – and scored eight touchdowns.
Jerick McKinnon will likely get the bulk of touches at RB2 again if Williams can’t play.
Mathieu’s questionable status has had no effect on the line. In fact, the Chiefs are bigger favorites know than when they opened as 6.5-point favorites last Sunday night.
