- Garoppolo has played 9 games combined over the last two seasons
- He threw for zero yards in pre-season debut
- Beathard would be next in line for starting QB job
Jimmy Garoppolo’s pre-season performance has been discouraging to say the least.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who made his first appearance in the pre-season since suffering an ACL injury 11 months ago, struggled against the Denver Broncos.

Garoppolo’s difficult debut already has people questioning whether the pivot is capable to lead the 49ers as their starting quarterback this season, especially after missing so much time over the last two years.
Can Jimmy G handle the workload? More importantly, how many starts will Garoppolo have this season after playing a combined nine games over the last two years?

Sportsbooks have released odds on whether Garoppolo will start all 16 regular season games for the Niners — with No coming in as the -200 favorite.
Is there any value in believing he will be the 49ers starting pivot for the entire regular season at +150?
Interceptions and Injuries Too Much to Overcome?
Garoppolo opened training camp on the right foot, going more than a week before throwing an interception during practice drills. However, his disastrous debut against Denver came five days after throwing five interceptions in a practice leading up to the pre-season game.

Over the last two seasons, injuries have kept Garoppolo off the field. He played six games in his first season with the 49ers and was limited to just three starts before suffering the ACL injury.
In 2018, Garoppolo completed 53 of 89 passes for a completion rate of 59.6%. He threw an impressive five touchdown passes and 718 yards, but also had three interceptions during that span. An even more glaring stat for Garoppolo is that he was sacked 13 times and had two fumbles.

Year | Games Played | Touchdowns | Passing Yards |
---|---|---|---|
2018 Regular Season | 3 | 5 | 718 |
2019 Pre-season | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Garoppolo’s struggles have carried over into the pre-season against the Broncos, where he completed one of six pass attempts for zero yards. He also threw an interception.
Shanahan Doesn’t Want Excuses
“All Jimmy needs is just to play football, whether he’s coming back from injury or not,” 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told the Sacramento Bee after the loss.
Garoppolo will be relied on heavily as the Niners don’t have much depth at the quarterback position. Should Garoppolo falter or suffer yet another injury, C.J. Beathard would be next in line. Beathard had six starts a year ago with 1,252 passing yards and eight touchdowns.

It’s also important to take into consideration San Francisco’s lack of depth and experience at wide receiver. Garoppolo’s two primary targets — aside from tight end George Kittle — will be rookie Deebo Samuel and second-year receiver Dante Pettis.
While it seems as if Garoppolo is fully recovered from his ACL injury, he’ll have to overcome the mental hurdles, which will eventually come with more reps.
However, there are too many questions in play to believe Garoppolo will start all 16 games for the 49ers.
Pick: No, -200
