  • The New York Jets continue to search for a new GM after firing Mike Maccagnan
  • Peyton Manning is considered by many to be a legitimate candidate despite never holding an NFL front office position
  • Eagles VP of Player Personnel Joe Douglas is the favorite thanks to his success helping build a Super Bowl winning roster in Philadelphia

Mike Maccagnan is out as GM of the New York Jets and rumors are swirling over who his replacement will be.

Head Coach Adam Gase is part of the search committee tasked with picking the Jets’ new GM and that could be important. He has a relationship with Peyton Manning and that could lead to the former QB getting more of a look than he might deserve. With that in mind, he’s one of two candidates I believe you should zero in on when considering where to lay your money.

Could Manning Be the Pick?

Adam Gase was Manning’s former offensive coordinator so there’s no denying their relationship. That could be important with Gase having a clear say on who his successor will be (Gase is acting GM during the search). Could Manning do the job? Why not.

John Elway has had success with the Denver Broncos and provides a great example of a former Hall of Fame QB can thrive in the management arena.

Anyone suggesting it’s a leap for someone who hasn’t been in a front office before is downplaying the fact Manning is clearly a great football mind. He would know more than anyone how to help shape a roster to give second year starter Sam Darnold the best chance to succeed.

John Elway has had success with the Denver Broncos and provides a great example of a former Hall of Fame QB can thrive in the management arena. Manning may not be the most natural candidate, but what have the Jets done over the past handful of years that leads you to believe something natural is about to happen?

Joe Douglas is the Leading Candidate

Manning would be a sexy hire, but Philadelphia Eagles VP of Player Personnel Joe Douglas may be the smart one. There is a reason he is the favorite paying only +125, and that’s because many reports have him atop the Jets’ wish list. There’s yet to be any indication the feeling is mutual, but with only 32 GM gigs available in the league, it would be hard to imagine one in a big market like New York coming available and Douglas rejecting an offer.

Douglas is credited with helping build the Eagles roster that won Super Bowl LII. That’s the type of leadership the Jets need to turn this ship around. As much as Manning may be the more entertaining option as an outsider, I believe the smart money goes with the favorite in this case.

Pick: Joe Douglas (+125)
