The total points projection for Sunday’s matchup between the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions continued to fall significantly leading up to kickoff.
The Lions vs. Eagles odds, which opened with a total of 49.5 at BookMaker earlier in the week, slipped to 45.5 by late Saturday evening.
Detroit Lions vs. Philadelphia Eagles Odds
Teams | Total at BookMaker | Point Spread | Moneyline |
---|---|---|---|
Detroit Lions | O 45.5 (-105) | +4.5 (-105) | +188 |
Philadelphia Eagles | U -45.5 (-115) | -4.5 (-115) | -225 |
Odds taken September 21
Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz is off to an excellent start, but he’ll be without DeSean Jackson, who was ruled out of the game with an abdomen injury. Jackson has been Philadelphia’s top offensive producer through two games, leading the team in receiving yards (154) and TD receptions (2). With Alshon Jeffry also questionable for Sunday’s game against the Lions, offense may be an issue for the Eagles.

Philadelphia Struggles on the Ground
The Eagles have struggled on the ground through two games this season with starter Jordan Howard accumulating 62 rushing yards. Philadelphia’s 86 rushing yards per game average also ranks near the bottom of the NFL so far.
Combined, the Eagles and Lions are averaging 46 points per game this season, which is slightly more than Sunday’s total points projection set by BookMaker.

After opening the season with a tie against the Cardinals, the Lions enter their Week 3 matchup without a loss. While scoring may not be an issue, Detroit has allowed the eighth most total yards against (811) this season.
Look for Matt Patrcia’s solid pass defense to put pressure on Wentz from the first snap of the game. The Eagles QB was sacked three times and endured 10 QB hits in Philadelphia’s Week 2 loss to the Falcons.

The Lions have the fifth most sacks in the league so expect Wentz to be under fire yet again.
Devon Kennard has been the biggest problem for quarterbacks so far this season as the Lions linebacker leads the team with three sacks to go along with nine total tackles.
Eagles, Lions have Posted 1-1 O/U Records this Season
The Eagles and Lions have identical 1-1 Over/Under records heading into action on Sunday.
The Eagles are 1-0 at home in the O/U this season, surpassing the total points in an opening 32-27 victory over the Washington Redskins. Meanwhile, the Lions’ O/U record on the road is 1-0 after their 27-all tie against the Cardinals in Week 1.

According to betting stats from Sports Book Wire, the Lions have hit the under in six off their last seven games against NFC teams. Conversely, the Eagles have gone under in four of their last five against NFC clubs.
If you’re expecting a high-scoring affair in this game, think again. Key injuries on both sides will likely keep the score under at -100. This could actually turn more into a defensive battle than anything.
The Eagles, who have lost three of the last five meetings against the Lions dating back to 2010,  will come out on top 20-16 — well under BookMaker’s projected total points.
Pick: Under 45.5 (-110)
