Week 4 Injury Report: Steelers vs Packers

Steelers Position Injury Status
Carlos Davis DT Knee Out
Chukwuma Okorafor OL Concussion Out
Rashaad Coward OL Ankle Out
Chase Claypool WR Hamstring Questionable
Packers Position Injury Status
Marquez Valdez-Scantling WR Knee Out
Elgton Jenkins OG Ankle Doubtful
Kevin King CB Concussion Doubtful
Vernon Scott S Hamstring Questionable

Pittsburgh already has several players out of their lineup and Chase Claypool could be another. He is now officially listed as questionable but has practiced little to none this week. The dreaded hamstring injury has claimed quite a few players and particularly wide receivers.

Watch for the status of players like Kevin King and even Krys Barnes. Concussions have sidelined both. Barnes at least has practiced on Thursday and Friday. Also, Aaron Rodgers will again not have his deep threat in Marquez Valdez-Scantling.

Roethlisberger Cannot Do This by Himself

Though Pittsburgh won its first game in Buffalo, the Steelers have, for the most part, struggled this season. Part of that may be the aging of Ben Roethlisberger.

The crazy thing with the Pittsburgh quarterback is that his workload has increased every single week. He threw 58 passes against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3. That is no misprint.

Again, the concern for Pittsburgh has to be very clear. Some think Roethlisberger is already washed up. He has been sacked eight times already and knocked down a ton last week against Cincinnati. It is simple. With two of Pittsburgh’s linemen out, it is simple to get pressure on Pittsburgh. That lack of line structure is affecting Najee Harris and the running game as well.

Now, let’s compare the quarterbacks quickly in the early going.

Roethlisberger vs Rodgers

Ben Roethlisberger
VS
Aaron Rodgers
130 Attempts 88
84 Completions 60
801 Yards 689
3 Touchdowns 6
6.2 Yards/Attempt 7.2
55.7 PFF Offensive Grade 69.0

The big concern with Roethlisberger is how much he is aging before our eyes. He needs help. There is little question to dispute that. The Pittsburgh quarterback has three interceptions and has looked downright like an old gunslinger on his last legs.

The Steelers and Roethlisberger have fared well against Green Bay in the past. Can they get the running game going? It got bad enough that Najee Harris (a running back) got 19 targets against the Bengals. That’s an indication of how dire the offensive line is currently.

If Roethlisberger cannot find his targets down the field, Pittsburgh is again in trouble on Sunday.

Rodgers Hopes to Keep Things Rolling

After the Week 1 flop, Rodgers bounced back with four touchdowns against Detroit then two more versus San Francisco as Green Bay rallied to win 30-28 in Week 3.

Rodgers benefits this week as he plays a Pittsburgh defense allowing over 350 yards per game. While their defense allows just 22 points per game, it does seem the Steelers are vulnerable even with a middle-of-the-pack defense. Daniel Carr did throw for 373 yards against Pittsburgh in Week 2. That may be a blueprint here.

Rodgers likely will have some time to look downfield on Sunday against the Pittsburgh defense. He has looked far more comfortable since the second half of Week 2 against Detroit. The rushing game for the Packers has steadily improved after a Week 1 meltdown. That will be key against a Pittsburgh team that is banged up.

If Rodgers gets the ball even a little downfield early, that can set up the running game which will keep Ben Roethlisberger off the field and the Packers defense as well.

What’s the Best Bet?

While Rodgers and the Green Bay offense can score 30+ points here, the problem is how many do they give up even against Pittsburgh. That is the big question.

There’s a possibility this game can turn into a bit of a higher-scoring contest. It does seem Vegas wants to will this into a lower-scoring contest. That could happen but it could digress into a shootout.

Expect both quarterbacks to bring their “A” game. The only fly in the ointment may be possible thunderstorms. Even then, it may be a risk but the over is our best bet for Sunday

The Pick: Over 45.5 (-110)
