  • The 10-2 New Orleans Saints will play host to the 10-2 San Francisco 49ers on Sunday for the NFC’s top seed
  • The Saints opened as three-point favorites
  • The 49ers are 4-0 ATS as an underdog this season – read below for a prediction on how the betting line could move between these two NFC heavyweights

Sunday’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens was the frying pan for the San Francisco 49ers. This Sunday, the Niners jump right into the fire against the New Orleans Saints.

The 49ers lost for the just the second time all season on Sunday, falling 20-17 at Baltimore in what was billed as a potential Super Bowl 54 preview. Whether that becomes a reality might very well depend on how the Niners do this weekend in New Orleans.

Both San Francisco and New Orleans are 10-2. That means Sunday’s winner would hold the all-important tiebreaker if the 49ers and Saints end up tied for the NFC’s best record.

Books like that team to be the Saints. They currently list the line on this game with New Orleans as a three-point favorite.

San Francisco 49ers vs New Orleans Saints Odds

Team Moneyline Spread Total
San Francisco 49ers +150 +3 (-105) Over 45.0 (-115)
New Orleans Saints -170 -3 (-115) Under 45.0 (-105)

Odds taken Dec. 1.

San Francisco has won two of its last three games at New Orleans. The Niners are 4-2 ATS on the road this season.

Well, That Didn’t Take Long

The opening line was barely up and it quickly moved further in favor of the Saints. New Orleans were a three-point pick when first posted the line for Sunday’s game, but within an hour the spread had grown to Saints minus-3.5. Just as quickly, it dropped back to three points.

That’s not surprising when you take into consideration that both of San Francisco’s losses were by the margin of a field goal. The 10-2 Ravens beat the 49ers 20-17 when Justin Tucker nailed a 49-yard field goal as time expired.

San Francisco was toppled from the ranks of the unbeaten by the 9-2 Seattle Seahawks in Week 10 by a 27-24 overtime count.

Risky To Give Points To 49ers

If the early trend holds and the line continues to grow in favor of the Saints, that’s good news to those planning to wager on San Francisco.

When it comes to betting, nothing’s proving to be finer than underdog 49ers. Sunday’s loss to Baltimore was a win for San Fran in the betting world. The Niners were six-point underdogs to the Ravens.

So far this season, the 49ers were listed as underdogs in the betting line four times. San Francisco is 3-1 straight up in those games, and 4-0 against the spread.

Besides the Ravens game, the 49ers won back-to-back road games as one-point dogs at Tampa Bay and Cincinnati to open the season. San Francisco also beat the Los Angeles Rams 20-7 in Week 5 as three-point road underdogs.

Can Saints Preserve This?

New Orleans is barely above .500 when giving away three or more points to the opposition. The Saints are 4-3 ATS in this scenario during the 2019 season.

Baltimore’s potent offense, which was good for 30-plus points for five straight games, was held to 20 points at home by the 49ers. Both of San Francisco’s losses were to playoff teams. The Saints lost to the 3-9 Falcons and the 7-5 Rams.

Nonetheless, based on the patterns exhibited this season, this line figures to grow slightly more in favor of the Saints. San Francisco’s been the chalk just twice on the road this season, at Arizona and at Washington. The Niners were road underdogs at Cincinnati, for crying out loud.

The 49ers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six against the Saints. This game is going to once again set up nicely for a play on San Francisco.
